JOSEPH COSTIE Obituary

Passed away peacefully at Juravinski Hospital after a long illness on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at the age of 74 years. Born in Hamilton on August 29, 1946 to William Struan Costie and Henrietta Jamieson (nee Walker). Predeceased by his loving wife Ann, infant daughter Heather, his mother Henrietta, his father William, Brother Bill (Joan), and nephew Patrick. Lovingly remembered by his daughter Joanna (Sebastien), and his grandchildren Colin and Elise, his siblings Mary(Jack), John (Joan), Helen(Paul), Jane (John), David (Peggy), Hal (Irene) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is also greatly missed by the Klein and Dalgetty families. In his youth, Joe was a gifted athlete, spending countless hours playing baseball and hockey. Joe loved sharing a beer and a story with everyone he met and was a great listener and observer of the world around him. He had a wonderful sense of humour, finding the comedy in the small and big things in life. He made everyone he met feel comfortable. Joe was a teacher, and he loved what he did. His teaching career spanned 30 years where he taught elementary school at St Eugene, St Mary, St John the Baptist and St Helen, before he retired in 2000. He had a way of making his students feel valued and always brought joy to the classroom. Joe loved to watch sports and was a die-hard Montreal Canadiens, Blue Jays and Cleveland Browns fan. He always wore his Browns and Habs gear proudly. He also loved to play euchre and cribbage, read the newspaper, and do crossword puzzles. He was a trivia aficionado and a radio fan. Dad had such amazing care at Juravinski; thank you so much to Dr. Jeurgens, Dr. Berg, and all of the doctors and nurses in the ICU. Your kindness and compassion to Joe and our family will never be forgotten. Due to COVID-19 regulations, a private family visitation, Funeral Mass and burial will be held. The Funeral Mass can be live streamed on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 11 a.m. via www.stpatrickshamilton.ca A celebration of Joe's life will be held at a later date. "Carpe Diem"

Joe was one of the good guys. We were next door neighbours in 1980. When he asked how you are doing, he actually listened to your reply. After all this time, I actually thought of him when His brownies made the playoffs last week. He will be remembered.

Joe was a great person with a fantastic sense of humour. I taught with him for many years at st eugenes. We also shared many beers at the derby with a bunch of teachers. Fun times together. His students all loved him and thought of him kindly. He will be truly missed. May he rest in peace. My condolences to the family. God bless. Mary gillen

I worked with Joe at St. Mary’s. He was always smiling and ready with a joke and a friendly ear. Very nice man.

Joe will be missed. Although I have been gone from Hamilton for 50 years I spent a lot of time around Joe in my teen and young adult years. He always had a way of making a joke and keeping me laughing. R.I.P. Joe

Sorry to hear about the Loss of your father, he was my grade 6 teacher at St Eugene school, way back in 1979. He was an awesome teacher saw the good in all of us. Funny how you remember only certain things from your past. He Really did value all his students and made us feel special. I guess that's way he was so memorable.
Rest In Peace Mr Costie
