Joseph Hueglin Obituary

A rebel with many causes, Joseph (Joe) Fred Hueglin, died at the age of 85 in Burlington, Ontario on July 5, 2022. Opinionated, passionate, and sometimes cantankerous, Joe spoke out on political issues in the Daily Digest he curated for 25 years. His pride in being elected to the House of Commons, for the riding of Niagara Falls in 1972, was rivaled by knowing he was the first Progressive Conservative to end a Liberal stronghold going back to 1935.
Joe taught history and geography at several schools in the Niagara Region during his career. He is likely remembered for wearing clogs, his booming voice, and a penchant for taking backtalking students to the Vice Principal's office. But, he also had a knack for teaching critical thinking, igniting social awareness, and helping students who had written off academics discover their true potential.
A firm believer that death is not the end of life, Joe's soul will be reunited with his wife and best friend of 56 years, Aase (née Erntgaard), who passed away in 2018.
Joe's family will forever miss their Big Brother, Dad, JoJo, Farfar, and Morfar. They will fondly remember his sarcastic wit, endless patience, deep pride in the smallest of their accomplishments, and a zealous love of Dr. Pepper.
His stories and history lessons live on through us. We will never forget his joyful tale of being awarded the gold medal for honours history at Assumption University (now the University of Windsor) or being reminded that he took first prize in the cutest baby contest at the Stratford Fair.
Joe's family would like to extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Village Manor (Waterdown), Joseph Brant Hospital, and Hamilton General Hospital for their care and attention these past few years. Arrangements have been entrusted to Passfield Mortuary Services Inc.
In lieu of flowers, Joe's family welcomes those who are interested to make a donation to the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation. Joe will be interred at Sunset Mindepark Cemetery with his wife, Aase, in a private service at a later date.
Bye for now.

Mr Hueglin was certainly a one of a kind teacher at Eastdale and I thought of him often. He is a positive component of my High School memories. My favourite Mr Hueglin move was if you were talking in the hallway while passing his in-session class you were "invited" in and made to sit at the back until the period ended. We had many guest students September and October, but word spread and the hallways were soon silent.

"Yes" or "no" was never a good enough answer in his class and had to be backed up with your thoughts on the topic of the day. I I proudly admit to using some of Mr Hueglin's methods while teaching myself.

My condolences to his family.

My condolences to the Hueglin family. I had the pleasure of meeting Joe my second year of teaching at Eastdale Secondary School, both teaching Grade Ten History. Joe was a mentor to me and his advice and encouragement helped me very much in my early years teaching. He demonstrated equality to all students. I later taught again with Joe at Stamford Collegiate, sharing a workspace in the History Office. Joe always had a kind word, or advice to share be it work related or life in general. May you Rest In Peace Joe, and thanks.

Mr. Hueglin sparked my interest in history as a young student, in particular Canadian history. I will be forever grateful for the exciting way he brought our past to life. RiP sir
