Passed peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at the age of 93. Loving husband of 68 years to Marguerite Folkes (nee Thomson); devoted father to David (Wendy) of Denver and Ian (Stevie) Folkes of Mississauga; and a proud grandfather of Alexandra (Lucas), Natasha of Calgary, Amy and Carter. Ken will also be dearly missed by his brothers Robert (Barbara) and Jack (Joyce).
Ken was born to Tom and May Folkes on October 7, 1928 in Greensville, West Flamborough, and grew up in Dundas, where he was active in the Boy Scouts and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets during WWII. Ken and Marguerite were married in Dundas on September 12, 1953 and immediately moved to Winnipeg, where Ken was working for Westinghouse. In 1958, after a brief stint in Toronto and Oakville, the family (now including Dave) moved to Montreal, where Ken managed Westinghouse's credit department and became fluent in French. The family (now including Ian) moved to Toronto in 1964 where Ken assumed increasing responsibilities with Westinghouse, including a temporary assignment in Vancouver in 1980 where he straightened out significant credit issues in record time, ultimately moving to Burlington and becoming the international credit manager based in the Hamilton head office, traveling to meet with customers in Europe and South America.
Ken and Marguerite took ballroom dancing lessons and were active in the Couple's Club while living in Toronto. Ken enjoyed playing cribbage with his friends for several years after retirement in Burlington. Ken was a sidesman with St. Timothy's church in Agincourt and St. Luke's church in Burlington for many years. Memorable vacations in the tent trailer took the family across most of the US and Canada over the years. One of Ken's biggest and best achievements outside of work was building the family cottage near Honey Harbour in 1974, which everyone continues to enjoy immensely to this day. We can't thank him enough for giving us this gift that will be enjoyed for generations to come.
An urn burial will be held at St. Luke's Church Cemetery at a later date. For those who wish, donations in Ken's honour to St. Luke's Anglican Church would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
