Linda LOWREY Obituary

21 March 1939 - 3 June 2022
Linda Gail Lowrey passed away peacefully early in the morning on Friday, June 3, 2022, at St. Peter's Palliative Care Hospital in Hamilton. Linda was born in Burnaby, BC and was the chosen child of Wesley and Edith (Plant) Lowrey. She regaled the family with tales of her beloved grandparents, John and Grace (Duckworth) Plant, where Grandpa Plant would kibbitz with her - she loved it. Linda is lovingly remembered by the Plant family. She was the dear niece of the late Stanley (Helen) Plant and Douglas (Violet) Plant. Linda will be missed by first cousin Marilyn (wife of the late David Stanley Plant), her children Michael, Robert, Michelle and their families. Aunt Vi's niece, Patricia (Pat) Sayles Marsdin, became a dear friend to Linda and support to Marilyn and Robert as they navigated the last six months. Linda, our family Historian, will be sadly missed by her many Lowrey cousins, nieces and nephews in St David's. She is also survived by her brother Neil (Linda) Maita, Uncle Arthur Plunkett, Uncle Jack (Kristine) Tait and many Tait and Morton cousins.
Her schooling took place in BC and Hamilton where Linda was a teacher-librarian for the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board retiring in 1994 after 35 years of service. After her adoptive mother, Edith Lowrey, passed away in 1980, Linda decided to search for her birth parents which resulted in an exciting reunion. Linda discovered her half-brother (Neil Maita) and several nieces and nephews - a surprise after being an only child for 41 years. Travelling was a passion of Linda's and over many years she made trips to England, Scotland, Ireland, various areas of the United States and Canada. Some of the travel ensued because of a growing interest in Family History and genealogy. She was a diligent and long-term volunteer for the Hamilton Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society which ceased operations in 2016. Meticulous in her work, Linda derived great satisfaction in tracing and compiling accounts of family histories and unravelling obscure details of descendants from previous decades and centuries. (This was important work which touched countless individuals around the world.)
The Plant family and Pat want to thank the caregivers at Hamilton's St. Joseph's Hospital, The Cardinal Retirement Residence, Juravinski Hospital, St. Elizabeth's Village and especially St. Peter's who allowed Linda to leave this world with dignity and grace. Linda will be buried in St. David's, Ontario, in a private family ceremony.

As a volunteer at the FHL in Hamilton I had the pleasure of speaking with Linda about genealogy and learning from her on many occasions. Such a knowledgeable and dear lady she will be missed.
