Maria HELT Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Dr. Maria Helt, our family's beloved matriarch, on January 22, 2022, in her own home, at the age of 93. Forever in love, she is now together again with her partner in life of 65 years, the late Dr. Andries Helt. Loving mother of 5 children: Robert (Kathi), Frank— deceased 2014 (Linda), Michael (Lori), Bruno (Julie), and Maureen. Survived by her sister Elly and brother Bruno and sister-in-law Gerda "Tan". Predeceased by her brother Piet and sister Hanneke. Her legacy includes 17 adoring grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues. A special thank you to Mom's live-in caregivers, Carolyn, and Fe, for their years of friendship, compassion, and care. Born and raised in Holland, Maria and Andries immigrated to Canada where they started their medical careers and family. Maria and Andries worked in partnership as family physicians for over 40 years. A woman ahead of her time, Maria's devotion to her career and family allowed her to accomplish what few women of that time were able to achieve. She was a passionate medical practitioner who devoted her life to helping others, including working with Spanish-speaking refugees in Hamilton and doing missionary work in South America. She lived her life with optimism, curiosity, compassion, a hint of adventure, and gratitude. She will be forever missed and never forgotten. Visitation will take place in 15-minute intervals on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home, 378 Wilson St. E., Ancaster (905) 648-3852. Due to COVID restrictions, guests must register in advance at https://signup.com/go/DJHRXvz or by calling the funeral home. Funeral Mass on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at 11:00 am at St. Joseph Parish (260 Herkimer St., Hamilton) with interment to follow at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. We were so sorry to hear of both Dr. A.C. Helt and Dr. Maria's passing. They were a great couple and doctors. Dr. A
C. Helt was my family's doctor since the early 60's until he retired and delivered both my brother and I. Our family being Dutch my grandfather and the doctor always had a lot to talk about. Lol. During our appointments you'd always see Dr. Maria popping in and out and on occasion would see her instead.
