Mark Nagler Obituary

Professor Mark Nagler (83) passed away on August 30, 2022. The son of Leo and Ann Nagler, predeceased by loving wife Sharon, Mark is survived by sons Adam (Jenny) and David (Claudia), sister Sari, brother Ernie (Janie), grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside funeral will be held on Sunday, September 4th, 2:00pm at Beth Jacob Cemetery, 1250 Snake Road, Burlington, Ontario.
Born with cerebral palsy, Mark was unable to walk until the age of five, and lacked the fine motor skills to write or type. Nonetheless, over the course of his life, he was able to overcome these and numerous other challenges with sharp intellect and determination. He earned a BA (UBC), MA (University of Chicago) and Ph.D (Sterling University). He taught Sociology and Disability Studies at the University of Waterloo for 29 years. Throughout his career, he published extensively, spoke internationally, and worked as a trailblazing advocate. Among his many accomplishments, Mark edited the first university textbook on disability, received the Queen's Jubilee Medal, and was appointed to serve on the Ontario Human Rights Commission. Beyond his professional success, Mark was a devoted husband and father, and his greatest pride and joy was being Zaidy to Lucy, Andrew, Alexander and Michael. He will be dearly missed by his family and numerous lifelong friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shalom Village who provided wonderful care throughout the final years of his life.

Mark was one of the first people we met when my husband became Rabbi of Temple Anshe Sholom and we moved to Hamilton. He was kind and supportive and always had great advice to share. His memory will always be a blessing.
