October 20, 1928-July 27,2022
Passed away peacefully at Alta Vista Manor in Ottawa in her 94th year. Devoted wife of the late Cornelis, "Neil", loving mother of Ted (Colleen Miles) and Ursula (Sean Kelly), and proud Nana of Sebastian (Joanne), Marc, and the late Zachary. She was delighted when she got more girls in her family starting with her daughter-in-law Janice and lastly when great-granddaughters Molly and Melikah came along. She is survived by her sister Ursula and brother John, her niece Lisa, several nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Mary and Neil immigrated from Holland in 1952 and spoke English fluently in six months flat, after which Neil changed the family name from Schot to Scott to stop his suffering the mispronunciations. They eventually settled in Burlington, Ontario, where Mary lived until 2008 before moving to Ottawa. Fun-loving and gregarious, Mary made many friends easily who stuck with her loyally. She was a snappy dresser, an avid reader, a steadfast Ticat fan, an excellent cook and rose gardener, could knit up a storm and maintained good health into her 90's despite (proudly) avoiding any formal exercise routine. She had a lovely voice and up until a couple of years ago could still impressively sing her favourite song "The Rose", by heart, unaccompanied and on-key. She adored music and dance from her European heritage. Attending the annual Salute to Vienna concerts featuring music by Johann Strauss was her favourite way to ring in the new year. She was also thrilled to attend any show that ended in the words "on ice". Her family is extremely grateful for the excellent care, compassion and kindness provided by all the staff at Alta Vista Manor. Arrangements in care of the Kelly Funeral Home Walkley Chapel, 1255 Walkley Road, Ottawa, K1V 6P9, 613-731-1255. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2265 Headon Road, Burlington, Ontario at 11 a.m. Interment in St. Paul's cemetery in Gatineau, Quebec will be at a later date. Donations would be appreciated to the March of Dimes in memory of her grandson Zachary.
