Maxim Wickens Obituary

Mr. Maxim Michael Wickens of Hamilton, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Monday 22 February 2021 at the age of 79. Max was born to parents George and Ruth Wickens on 14 May 1941 in Oxford, England. The family immigrated to Canada in 1957, whereupon Max started a long and award-winning career in the newspaper industry, primarily with the Hamilton Spectator and Toronto Star. Max was a founding member of the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada and served as communications director at British Leyland Motors and Nissan Canada. In 1966, Max married Sheila Wickens (neé Kelly) with whom he had five children. Max is survived by his children, Kathryn, Timothy (Asha), Melanie, Rebecca and Stephanie (Joe); grandchildren, Chloë, Sophie, Samuel, Connor, Arthur and Tyler; brothers and sisters, Anna, Simon, Clare, Andy, Stephen and Paul, and many other loving family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Giles and grandson Felix. A private cremation is being arranged with a celebration of life to be held later in the year when it is possible to gather in greater numbers. More details will be published when available. The family is grateful for donations to charities promoting the mental and physical health of children, including Breakfast Clubs of Canada, with which Max volunteered, and Kids Help Phone.

You were one of the nice guys at the Spec, Max. Rest in peace after a life well lived ... and condolences to your family, former friends and colleagues at the Spectator as well as the Toronto Star, and of course the 'Old Codgers' lunch club.

I recall Max joining British Leland Motors Canada as Communications Director, in the early 1970’s. His laid back style and great sense of humour, quickly endeared himself to his fellow workers and associates.
I am sure, that living his formative years in Oxford England; which at that time was the home of Morris and MG Motors may have spawned Max’s love of the automobile and everything associated with the industry.
These traits were reflected in Max’s articulate writings. His prose could take a prosaic subject, and transform it into a warm, exciting
and informative medium.
It has been a great pleasure to have known and worked with Max and our continued friendship for more than 50 years.
