Michael Jefferson Obituary

There is a new star in the firmament. Michael Douglas Jefferson, in his 78th year, left the earth to float in his beloved sky on November 22, 2022 at the Juravinski Hospital. There will be a funeral service at Ryerson United Church, 265 Wilson Street East, Ancaster, Ontario at 2 p.m. on December 11, 2022.

Mike was an elementary school teacher in Hamilton-Wentworth for many years. He was active in many organizations, including the Hamilton Association for the Advancement of Literature, Science and Art; the Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair which is an organization dedicated to inspiring young people to change the world through science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and was a founding member of the Hamilton Amateur Astronomers. Mike spent many happy hours observing the universe. Mike was a life-long member of Ryerson United Church, serving in many capacities.

When Mike was in his forties, he followed his dream, and started taking tap dancing lessons. He danced in many shows, including the Golden Age Variety in Hamilton, Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance in Burlington, and Bring Back Tap in Kitchener. Wherever he was, Mike could be found tapping. In fact, on a cruise, he tapped from end of the ship to the other and became known by all as Mr. Tap Dance. Later in his life, Mike started taking other kinds of dancing lessons including jazz, ballet, and clogging. It was through dance that Mike met his wife Jean. In their years together, Mike and Jean enjoyed travelling, life at the cottage and, of course, dancing.

He is survived by his wife Jean, his sisters Mary Karchemny (Roger) and Barb Bentham (Lyle). He is also survived by his nephews and nieces, Joseph (Deb), Kristin (Randy), Brian (Sarah), Craig (Ashley), and Jillian (Rob). He has eight great-nieces and nephews-Emily, Samantha, Nyah, Sydney, Clara, Clark, Corbin, and Sawyer. He is also survived by Jean's children, Barbara Craig, Jo-Ann Greene, David Craig (Sue), Kathryn Craig, and Jeff Craig. He has nine grandchildren-Yancy (Kayt), Kyle, Sean (Jamie), Anna, Malcolm (Esther), Sarah-Jean, Ewen, Jude, and Keira, and one great-granddaughter, Rowan.

If desired, expressions of sympathy to the Cancer Society, and the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be sincerely appreciated.

Our daughter Jasmine says Mike was the best teacher she ever had. What a creative and fine person he was and such a gentle soul. God bless his soul.

My sister Sue (Town) Roszell and I were very sad to hear of Michael's passing. We first knew him as kids in Ancaster. The Jeffersons were our next-door neighbours on Lloyminn Avenue. Mary was our beloved babysitter with Michael a very occasional replacement. Barb came to our house from lunch as their mom was working as a teacher in those days - obviously a family tradition! Everyone became a teacher.
Our family left Ancaster in 1966, but I returned to live in Hamilton in 1989 when our kids were young. Lo and behold, our new next-door Hamilton neighbours were Al and Lorraine Stacey. What a coincidence. Al was a good friend of Mike's. The Staceys lived just behind us on Colleen Crescent. So this reconnected us with the Jefferson family. We had a Christmas gathering once or twice at our place. And I occasionally bumped in to Mike at the McMaster talks.
He was a man of many interests - and shared with my husband Richard and I, and with Al Stacey, a great love of the outdoors.
Sue and I were planning to come to the funeral, but now are not able to make it. We just want to send our sympathy to Jean and the whole extended family.
Sincerely,
Carol Town and Sue (Town) Roszell
