Michael JOHNSTON Obituary

Dr. Michael Andrew Johnston passed June 24, 2022. He was born May 19, 1930 in Belfast. His early years were in India, war years in England, on to the north of Ireland, and then Dublin where he graduated from Trinity College in medicine. In 1957 he and Elizabeth McKimm married and together they emigrated to Hamilton, Ontario.
Michael's kindness and compassion for others shone through in all he did, but especially as a family doctor in Dundas where he practiced for 35 years. In 1971 he, together with Drs N. Flett, D. Richardson, J. Williams formed Dundas Family Medical Group. Those he worked with he considered an extension of his family, and Michael's family shared him with his practice.
Michael had an extraordinary curiosity and zest for life. All that he undertook to do and learn, he did with gusto.
But mostly Michael's heart beat for the love of his life, Elizabeth; they celebrated 65 years of marriage 11 June, 2022.
Michael is also survived by his sister Mrs. Audrey Scales and cousins in the north of Ireland with whom he shared an enthusiasm for sailing, and cousins in the GTA with whom we celebrated years of family gatherings. Also by his son Robert, daughter Maeve, (Dr. Dave Campbell), granddaughters Elizabeth (Kai) Borghesan, Alana (Brian MacMahon), Ryann, Eryn.
Michael was a fervent family man, but most thrilled to be a grandfather. He built rooms, a bunky, sheds, dry stone walls, a pool, and even a bridge to accommodate his wife, children and four granddaughters. The example, guidance and involvement given by Michael and Elizabeth encouraged the four young women to become competent, kind people excited about life.
Thank you Michael, for that legacy.

Our family had the good fortune to have Dr. Johnston as a family physician for 17 years. He delivered exemplary care to us on so many levels! One memory serves as an example. When my daughter was just under 2 years of age, she fell and broke her arm. Several weeks later, we appeared in Dr. Johnston's office for cast removal. As a nurse and mother, I couldn't envision how this might be accomplished on a toddler, given the size of the lower arm cast. He gazed thoughtfully at the miniature cast, and then said, "Let's try this!" Ever so gently, he pulled on it downwards, and the cast slid off smoothly without resistance. It was the perfect solution, and my little one was as happy as we were! Dr. Johnston will be remembered fondly by so many. Our deepest condolences to his family, friends and former patients.

Dr Johnston was our family physician for years , he delivered myself, my sister and several nieces and nephews ..he was gentle , compassionate and thorough. He was also ahead of his time in advocating self care and awareness and the importance of regular exercise and listening to your body . Dr Johnston set the bar high for every practising family doctor. We missed him terribly when he retired ,he was simply a wonderful human ! Our love and prayers to his lovely wife Elizabeth and his family. RIP Doc xo
