Muriel MIDDLETON Obituary

January 1, 1936 - March 2, 2022

Our beloved mother, Muriel Middleton (née Zinkewich) passed away in her new home in Waterloo, Ontario. She was the cherished wife of Gerard Middleton who died November 2, 2021; they were married for 62 years and she missed him terribly. Muriel is survived by children Laurence (Robin), Teresa (John), and Margaret (Sean); and grandchildren Katrina (Ben), Robert, Thomas, and Charlie. She was predeceased by her brother Eddie Zinkewich (Ruth) and her parents William and Katy Zinkewich. Muriel was born to a Ukrainian family on a farm in Saskatchewan; she grew up in Brantford and then lived for over 50 years in Ancaster. She was the first of her family to attend university and had a life-long love of poetry, literature, and correcting her family's grammar. Muriel was still known as "Sam" to some, after her "Sam's philosophy column" at McMaster. Muriel and Gerry were a team and Mom was the supporting partner in Dad's career as a sedimentology professor. They travelled together for his work and spent sabbaticals in places like California, England, France, and Seattle. She was an expert seamstress and member of the Hamilton Quilter's Guild, and learned Zoom with her friends at French Club. Muriel was a devoted wife, a wonderful mom, and a smart and funny woman, and her family will miss her so much. Many thanks to her dear friends, and her "family" at St. Peter's in Hamilton for their support during the last few years. The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Ancaster, where she and Gerry were members for almost 60 years. Interment will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Friends are welcome to come to the church or the cemetery. Please RSVP to attend the service through the funeral home website or call 519-749-8467. Masks are mandatory. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation - St. Peter's Hospital Foundation and online remembrances are at www.henrywalser.com (cards available at the funeral home).

I met Muriel forty years ago through our mutual love of the french language. I loved her for her off-the -wall sense of humour and her kindness to everyone.

Au revoir ma tres chere amie.

Condolences to the family. Muriel and I knew each other through the quilt guild. She was a mentor to me, giving me ideas and help in my earlier days of quilting. She was an inspiration.
