Om BHARGAVA Obituary

Was born to Shri Dwarika Prasad and Shrimati Chanda Devi Bhargava, in their ancestral home in Loha Mandi, Agra, India. With his father passing unexpectedly at a young age, Om and his brother, Satya Prakash, and sister, Kusum, were raised by their single mother. From an early age, Om found purpose through pooja (prayers) and meditation, which continued to be a part of his daily rituals throughout his life. Education was also of the utmost importance, and Om graduated with a BSc from Agra College and MSc Tech from Harcourt Butler Technological Institute. He was married to his loving wife, Shiela (January 17, 1952 - August 17, 2005) for over 50 years. Om (and for most of his life, referred to affectionately as Papa/Nana/Baba by his family), had an astute determination, attention to detail, and zest for life. From working in chemical plants and being able to recall specific details of the reactions to this day, his fearless abundance brought him on many journeys. Taking a boat from his native India to the UK and graduating with a DIC from Imperial College London, to moving to Canada where he and his wife raised their family and became an integral part of their communities (Dundas, India Canada society, Hindu Samaj Mandir, and many more). During this time, Om worked for Stelco and a highlight of his career was being a member of the International Standards Organization, representing Canada on numerous overseas delegations while also contributing to over 50 academic papers and writing a book discussing the prevention of pollution in the iron and steel industry. Throughout his life, he took pleasure in the adventure and wonder of travel and made it his mission to experience the world, having explored six continents. Up until the time of his death, Om lived life to the fullest. Even in his 95th year, he was travelling internationally, cooking meals, driving, and living independently and happily in his home in Burlington, Ontario. As a true man of the people, Om made friends everywhere he went and his energy, passion, and resolve for life will leave an impact on anyone who was lucky to cross his path, even for a moment. Om will be deeply missed and celebrated by his family, including his four children, Rajeev (Nalini), Manisha (Tejay), Rita (Pravin), Sunita (Sandeep), his nine grandchildren, Soniya (Anand), Varun (Denoja), Shivani (Andy), Monika, Sachin (Fiona), Isha, Nisha, Priya (Rohan), Rishi (Abina), and his three great-grandchildren Hugo, Corinna, Henri Om (with more on the way). Papa, Nana, Baba, we love you. You are with us in our thoughts, daily actions, and prayers. The visitation, prayers and service will take place Wednesday, March 29, 2023, from 10:00am to 12:30pm at Bay Gardens Funeral Home (1010 Botanical Drive, Burlington) with a private family cremation ceremony.

I first met Om in 1981 when I was transferred to the Stelco laboratories. Om was responsible for Analytical Chemistry at Stelco which meant he had to develop methods and solutions for analyzing complex matters.
Om was very accomplished and recognized as an innovator by chemists in the steel industry. He will be well remembered for his help and support of his colleagues and contributions to the science.
