Paul Bates Obituary

Paul always said he would go when there was nothing left, and he kept true to his word. In fact, his latest diary had pages set to go to exactly September 4, 2022, the day he passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.

Indeed, Paul had done more with his 72 years on earth than some would have taken generations to achieve. From very humble beginnings in the East End of London, England to a strong and steady rise through business and academia in Canada, to his numerous positions with non-profit and charitable organizations, it would take many pages to list out all his various career titles held, accolades given, impacts made, books authored, certifications and degrees earned, marathons ran, and regattas raced.

And yet, his greatest legacies are his family, his faith, and his service to community. These three have sustained all of us through the journey we shared with Paul. And these legacies will continue to ripple through the lives of those nearest to him, and perhaps those who maybe just met him briefly.

A loving and devoted husband, a loving dad and father-in-law, and the best of grandfathers, Paul has left us strong and ready to carry on. We know he will be with us always.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Sally, his three daughters Rachel Formaro (Tom), Elizabeth Henderson (David), and Charlotte Oickle (Greg), and his grandchildren, Thomas Henderson, Sarah Henderson, and Gabriella Formaro. He is also survived by his sister, Janet Moreland (Roger) and brother, Stephen (Dorothy) and his nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Ernest Bates, and his mother, Violet Ruth Bates, aunts and uncles, and various beloved animals that were part of the family over the years.

Paul's family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre, especially those working in C3.

A visitation was held at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill Street North, Waterdown, Ontario, on Friday, September 9th, between 2:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-9:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be directed to Juravinski Research Institute.

I had the privilege of knowing Dr. Paul Bates as a fellow student at McMaster Divinity College. I was immediately struck by his humility. For a man who has accomplished so much, he was so down-to-earth and incredibly kind and gracious. His gentle spirit was a reflection of his faith in Christ. He was a blessing to so many people. Sending my deepest condolences to his loved ones.

Dean Paul Bates was a great mentor and friend to me during and after my academic years at DeGroote. I will always remember his lessons in grounding myself in moments of joy and sorrow and reminding me and my peers that people may not remember what you say or do, but will always remember how you make them feel. Paul, you always made me feel safe, empowered, and I am so grateful to have had those monumental lessons from you. Rest well and thank you.

Not even sure where to start. Paul has been so instrumental in my own and family's life. I had the good fortune of meeting him during my undergrad at DeGroote.....his experience and perspective were inspiring. Our relationship developed over the years as he was kind enough to act as a mentor in my life (believe a pillar to both my personal and professional success), both he and Sally also joined some of our family/life celebrations as our family grew and Paul even did us the honour to join in leading the baptism of our first born. Our hearts go out to Sally and their children. Paul was a blessing, and touched the lives of so many people, he had a big heart, sharp intellect, and amazing drive. We will miss him but will continue to keep him in our hearts and prayers.
All our love,

An amazing leader - both in my days as a student and beyond as we stayed connected after I graduated. I am really so grateful for everything he did for us as students. May he rest in peace
