Paul PIRIE Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the loss of our beloved father, peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, in his 92nd year. He will be deeply missed by his wife Irena of more than 60 years, his children Marika (Oleh), Marta (Peter), Paula and Paul Jr. (Robin), his grandchildren Tamara (Chris), Katerina (Brian), Adrian, William, Isabel, and his great grandchildren Isla and Maxton. Predeceased by brothers Alan, Alex (Velma), and sister Sylvia (Tony). Dear brother of R. Gordon Pirie (Deborah) of Pennsylvania.

Born in 1931 in Dundas, Ontario, son of Russell Fraser Pirie and Olive Leona Croft, Paul graduated from McMaster University in 1954. He later became Planning Director for the City of Hamilton and then President of Philips Planning & Engineering in Burlington. He was devoted to his family, always putting the needs of others ahead of his own. Remembered always for his cheerful nature and ready smile. A talented musician, he was a wonderful pianist as well as trombonist in big bands in the Hamilton area in the 1950s, including the Ron Wickens Orchestra and the RCAF 424 Squadron band. He composed musical arrangements for many local bands and in later years volunteered for the Sound of Music festival in Burlington.

Thank you to the team of PSWs and nurses for their kindness and care - with particular thanks to Tom and Bilkisu for their compassion and dedication.

Visitation Friday, February 3rd at 10:30 a.m., followed by a service at the Marlatt Funeral Home (Dundas), with burial at Grove Cemetery, 129 York Road. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke foundation.

Paul and I played in bands around Hamilton together many times. He was a fine trombonist and helped me play better with his knowledge and encouragement. His coaching helped me get a place as second trombone in the Ron Wickens Orchestra. Paul and I made up the trombone section in Don Sebire“s short-lived but exciting band. We enjoyed many a jam session, a musicians joke and a scotch and soda.

We first met playing in the Dundas town band and found we loved jazz,Woody Herman being a favourite. I lived just a few blocks down Park Street so we got together often to listen to records.

Though our paths grew apart after I moved to Toronto, I thought of him often. I know he will be deeply missed by all those who had the good fortune to spend time with him.

My condolences to all his family.
