Peter GREENBERG Obituary

January 20, 1944 - September 24, 2022

Devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and educator. Peter Greenberg passed away at age 78 on September 24, 2022. He was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Toba Greenberg, and his in-laws Samuel and Mary Berlin. Peter will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 51 years, Penny, his children, Joshua, Adam and Matthew, his daughters-in-law, Rachel Fabich, Tracey Greenberg and Janette Kruegel, his grandchildren, Leah, Toby, Charlie and Ellie, his brother Joel and sister-in-law Phyllis, his nieces, Jessica and Rebecca, and a large network of family and friends both near and far. Peter's professional calling was education. He joined the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board in the early 1980s as a child behavioural consultant. Peter would later serve the board as a Special Education Consultant, as Principal of Special Education, and as a school principal at Collegiate Avenue and Dundas District. Peter was always restless and kept himself busy. After only a few years of retirement, he returned to professional life as Principal of Kehila Jewish Community Day School. He was an active volunteer for the federal and provincial Liberal parties as a member of the executive for the Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale riding association. Peter served the wider Hamilton community as Chair of Hamilton Housing Help Centre (2009-22). Peter was an avid sports fan and keen observer of Canadian and international politics. He loved to travel with Penny: to the Caribbean, Florida, and particularly British Columbia and Mexico where they spent many holidays with Adam, Tracey and Ellie. Peter enjoyed thrillers, mystery novels and biographies of political leaders; he preferred The Beatles to The Stones; and he never passed on a good sipping tequila or sherried scotch. Peter's greatest passion was his family with whom he loved spending time at the cottage (his happy place). He was the love of Penny's life, and a patient father (lord knows he had to be with his "pack of animals," as he affectionately called the boys). The boys will fondly remember their dad's many roles: soccer coach, hockey coach, chef, tutor, mentor, and advocate. Peter always put his family's needs and wishes ahead of his own. Instead of enjoying summer holidays like most educators, he worked extra jobs so Penny could stay home with the boys. His most unusual side gig was as an overnight duty officer at a Brantford halfway house (a source of great stories!). Peter taught his children to be grateful for all they have, to seek joy in their lives, to advocate for those in need, to be passionate about all they do, and to be kind, generous and giving, of both their time and attention. The family is grateful to the dedicated doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, therapists, personal support workers and others at Juravinski Cancer Hospital for their care and compassion, to those who provided end of life care for Peter at home, and to the wonderful team at Margaret's Place (St. Joseph's Villa) who supported Peter in his final days. Family, friends, and former colleagues are invited to gather and share stories and memories of Peter at Circle of Life Cremation and Burial Centre, 100 King St. East., Dundas on Friday, September 30, between 10 am - Noon or 2 pm - 4 pm. (additional parking at the Air Force Club). It is with much sadness that I just heard about Peter´s passing. My condolences to Penny and the rest of the immediate family.

I met Peter later in his life when we were both volunteering for the Liberals of the Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale riding Association a few years back.
Peter had a keen sense of humour and remember laughing at much of the crazy happenings that occur during an electoral campaign.

You will be missed by many my friend. Until our paths cross again.....

I was so saddened to hear of Peter´s passing just yesterday. I was flooded with warm memories of working together at Paris Central School. We became good friends and I was included in many family activities with dear Penny, Joshua, Adam and Pax. Matthew had not yet arrived.
Sending love and deep condolences to Penny and the family. He touched many lives with his sensitivity and compassion, and had many friends and admirers.

Sending our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to your family at this difficult time. It has been many years since spending time with Mr. Greenberg, but remember him fondly. We were very saddened to learn of Peter´s untimely passing and wish to express our sincerest condolences on your loss to Penny, Josh, Adam, Matt and their families.

We were fortunate to know and spend many happy times with Peter and his family, of whom he was so proud. We coached hockey, played softball and socialized for a number of years while in Dundas, all the while marvelling at Peter´s positive mindset and indefatigable, passionate pursuit of excellence as an educator, a coach, a mentor and as a caring human being who enjoyed life to the fullest . His family should be comforted in the knowledge that he made such a lasting , favourable impact on so many who were fortunate to have known him. May he forever rest in peace.

How can we not remember? July 1974? New Canadians ,five of us, temporarily living next door to the Greenbergs New Ontarians. Peter, Penny , Baby Joshua, and dog Pax. What a wonderful gift our first Canadians. They were very special we discovered because they were decidedly different as were we. Thank you Peter for your input in our first months in Canada. In Fun Living. Your positive attitude to a free spirit in our children new to a different system. (School). Priceless. Your legacy lives on in your family . Deepest condolences to Penny & family.

I worked with Peter at both Program Services and Collegiate Avenue Public School.
Peter was the principal and I was his Office Administrator. My memories of Peter are many but what stands out most was his kindness and commitment to the staff and students. Peter was one of the hardest working people I have met. The staff and students of the school were extremely fortunate to have Peter at the helm.
My sincere condolences to Penny and the family, you were truly his greatest pride.

Peter and I go back many moons ago. We both attended St. Laurent High , Sir George Williams University , and teaching at I'Berville High School, and then we both ended up teaching for HWDSB . What a coincidence. We both have to thank Ann Hughes for hiring us to teach at I
Berville high. I last saw Peter in 1997. What a great guy.
My condolences to Penny and Family...Peter Whyte

Had the pleasure of working with Peter and teaching his son Joshua. Peter was my mentor at Dundas District Public School. An outstanding educator and leader, Peter was relentless in his energy and efforts to make school a better place for both staff and students. I was so fortunate to have Peter support me in my educational pursuits. His positive outlook on life was his greatest attribute.
