passed away in Hamilton after a short stay at St. Joseph's Hospital. Husband to Helga (Schillemat) and father to Mathias (Valerie), Tobias (Connie), Andreas (Andrea) and Esther and grandfather to Claire and Nathan, Reinhold was born in Luxembourg before moving to Wiesbaden, Germany with his father Richard and mother Martha and four siblings Wilfried, Birgit, Gunther and Gudrun. After completing his formal education in technical studies, he spent his early to mid-20s as a draftsman at revered German engineering firm Lurgi AG before emigrating to Canada in 1963 to join Gunther and Birgit by way of a transatlantic trip during which he celebrated his birthday, which he still fondly remembered decades later.
After settling in Canada, he worked for a short time in Toronto before commencing a long and rewarding career in Hamilton as a machinist and tool and die maker at Canadian Porcelain and Lapp Insulators on property next to Chedoke Golf Course. Reinhold was known within the Kirkendall neighbourhood of west Hamilton for his impossibly large urban vegetable garden which was a tremendous source of pride for Helga and himself. He also thrilled in assisting neighbours with machine repairs and a word-of-mouth lawn mower sharpening business. He was a devoted member of a number of Hamilton-area Christian church and worship organizations including St. John's Lutheran Church, Stanley Avenue Baptist Church and Blessings Church and enjoyed singing in the choir and playing the Kuhlohorn. Reinhold and Helga also enjoyed spending time within the German Lutheran communities in Waterloo and Toronto and regularly attended summer holidays with family and friends at congregation vacation property in Thunder Beach near Penetanguishene.
Although he experienced a number of health challenges in recent years, Reinhold continued to be intensely active well into his 80s, including daily bicycle rides to Hamilton Bayfront Park and hikes on the Bruce Trail. His link to Germany also continued as he regularly returned for visits with his siblings and childhood friends and indulged in his love of the outdoors with trips along the Rhine River and to the Black Forest.
Our thanks to the excellent nurses and critical care staff at St. Joseph's and to Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Juravinski Cancer Centre for their expert care over the last few years. Our family's memorial observances will be private and anyone who wishes to commemorate Reinhold's life is invited to contribute to two of his favourite charities, the Good Shepherd and the Salvation Army.
