Rick McCabe Obituary

Surrounded by his loving family on February 28th, 3 days before his 78th birthday, Rick passed peacefully into the next life. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and proud Newfie, he leaves behind his adoring wife of 38 years, Sandy, children Michael (Sherri), Michelle, Adam (Kim), and grandchildren Kathleen, Shayla, Brooke, Connor, Ashtyn, Scott and Cari. He will be dearly missed by his great-grandchildren, cousins, extended family, countless friends and anyone who was fortunate enough to have met him. Rick's kind heart and fantastic sense of humour were infectious. He lit up a room when telling Newfie jokes or recounting stories from days past and his kindness was limitless. He loved the Tiger Cats, curling, playing cards, horseshoes, darts, bowling (even appearing on Bowling for Dollars in the '80's!); really anything that brought his friends and family together. Rick was a dedicated 911 Dispatcher for the Hamilton Police Services for almost 30 years, and remained an active member of the Police Retirees' Association. Cremation has taken place and a small family ceremony will be held. In lieu of a service, Rick wanted a party. This will take place in the near future, time and place to be determined. In lieu of flowers, Rick can be honoured by a random act of kindness or a donation to the charity of your choice.

Oh yes what wonderful memories left behind by Ricky my love. I had the great pleasure of working with Ricky since the early 80's. His flair for fashion with his permed hair and mismatched leisure suits left one in total awe. His love of spaghetti and hot chili peppers and his disdain for egg salad. Of course one will never forget the day they filled his donut with egg salad. Pulling up his socks and kicking the exit door sign were all his trademarks. He loved to tell stories and Newfie jokes and we all heard many. He was a great dispatcher who always ensured the officers on the street stayed safe. His legacy is the many many fond and funny memories that he allowed us to be part of and share. Sandy my heart breaks for you and your family. Be comforted in knowing that Ricky touched so many lives and will not be forgotten.

Sandy and Family
Please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of Rick. He was a really great guy!
Rick was an absolute joy to work with. His 'lay of the land' knowledge and calming voice on the radio were second to none. I treasure my memories of his professional yet humorous style.
'You've been dispatched Rick, rest in peace with the good guys up there!'

Sincerely,
Patti Cole-Stever

Oohh what wonderful memories of Ricky "my love"..whether in the comm centre..the couple trips to Jamaica..our "group" events including murder mystery nights..or at the pool..playing shuffleboard or darts in that carpet tiled basement..the list goes on. Always quick with a newfie joke or funny story whether true or embellished, you kept us all amused and laughing out loud. Keep all your new friends in heaven entertained and please don't scare them by "pulling up your socks"!
Our condolences to Sandy and the entire McCabe family.

Sandy and family. I was sadden to hear the passing of Rick. I always enjoyed Newf's presence and sense of humour in the year I worked in Communications.... from him sending a "hot" call on the Card track (pre 1984) listening to a collection of hilarious 911 calls (for training purposes of course).

My sincere condolences.

My sincerest condolences for the passing of Rick. I knew him throughout my entire career. He was a perennially cheerful man. I had the opportunity of being a Communications Sergeant for 3 years in the 90's which brought me closer to him. He was truly a team player who helped me out (took pity on me) in my first year in the Comm Centre. May he rest in peace.

I'm so very sorry to learn of Rick's passing. I cannot count how many times over the years he "looked after" me as a field officer... understanding the situation, then coordinating a response with no further input required...a wonderful thing in a tactical situation where you don't have time to explain...
Later in my career, I was posted to the 911 call centre where I got a chance to watch him in action! "Wow" is all I can say! Situational Awareness at the Mic and incredible understanding and patience, always with compassion on the incoming phone lines. I recall monitoring a call one shift and praising him at the conclusion.
His response? " Nobody calls 911 to chat... they're having a very bad day and we're the ones they are depending on."
THAT was so "Rick"... I admired him immensely.

I haven't seen Rick since my retirement, except perhaps at the odd function; however, I have to say I believe the obituary has captures the essence of the man in full. I am very happy to have known him and extremely sorry for your loss.

Sandy and family,
I am sorry for your loss. Please accept my sincere condolences. Rick was a wonderful person who worked hard in his role as 911 dispatcher. For us as patrol officers, it was a pleasure to hear his voice on the air. It gave us a sense of confidence knowing that he was working and that he had our backs. He was extremely knowledgeable and professional in performing his duties. He was very well liked and a big part of our team. As you know, he worked hard for us retirees for years and we sure appreciated it. Great sense of humour. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
