Robert HUGET Obituary

1947 to 2022

Bob Huget passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at St Peter's Hospital in Hamilton. He was 75. Pre-deceased by his parents John Huget and Julia Huget (nee Crozier) and by his brother Gerry Huget; loving brother of Linda Nagel. Bob will be sorely missed by his beloved wife of 24 years, Lori Mackenzie, and by his beloved daughter, Susannah Huget.
Bob was born on May 28, 1947 in Regina, Saskatchewan and worked in several jobs before finding his occupational home in the oil and gas sector. Moving to Sarnia, Ontario to work for Shell Oil, Bob also found a passion for workers' rights and the shop floor power struggle. He became a militant activist in the Energy & Chemical Workers Union (ECWU) and later in the Communications, Energy & Paperworkers Union (CEP).
Partisan engagement followed naturally from his trade union work with Bob finding his political home in the New Democratic Party. He worked hard in many local, provincial, and federal campaigns, and was elected as the NDP-MPP for Sarnia in 1990. At Queen's Park Bob was a tireless champion for workplace justice, health and safety, and for the well-being of ordinary families. Leaving office in 1995, Bob continued working for working people as a regional political leader in the CEP.
Bob struggled courageously with declining health for the last decade and a half of his life - from COPD to a lung transplant to cancer. Throughout it all he never lost hope or his sense of humour. At St Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton, he was an engaged patient-volunteer, sharing his insights and experience with other sufferers of serious respiratory illness.
Lori and Susannah extend their deep gratitude to the many health professionals and institutions involved in Bob's care in recent years: St Joseph's Hospital's Firestone Clinic; the Juravinski Hospital; the palliative care team at St Peter's Hospital; the transplant team at Toronto General Hospital; and the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Memorial donations to any of these world-class operations would be appreciated. Donations are also encouraged to the New Democratic Party of Canada and the Ontario New Democratic Party. An opportunity to celebrate the life of Bob Huget will be organized in the months ahead. Arrangements entrusted to Bay Gardens Funeral Home, Hamilton (905.574.0405).

How sad it was to hear of Bob's passing. I have COPD and am a member of the Compass Community Health 'Take a Breath" (TAB) program. Bob came to speak to us and he shared his COPD story. He inspired the whole class and made a lasting impression on me and the other groups he visited. He passed on his enthusiasm, zest for life, determination and gratitude. I'll never forget him.

My sincere condolences to Bob´s family and friends. He was a true blue trade unionist who always placed workers and their families at the forefront. May he RIP.

I was so sorry to hear that Bob has died, and that he had been having health problems for a long time.
He was part of our wonderful NDP caucus of 1990 to 1995. How much better Ontario would be now if we had been re-elected and our reforms had had time to bear fruit. He was a good man.
