Sharleen SMILLIE Obituary

Sharleen passed away peacefully at the age of 78, with her family by her side, on the morning of Sunday, February 13, 2022, at St. Joseph's hospital after a brief illness with cancer.

She is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 54 years, Ian, son Colin (Kiersten Eyes) and daughter Sara Gruppe (Andy). Her joy at being a mother was multiplied exponentially when she became Gramma in September of 2008 with the arrival of Olivia and multiplied again when Luke and Beau followed in May of 2010 and June of 2012. "Gramma's precious angels" were spoiled with their favourite foods, playing board games, swims in the pool, and a constant presence of love and light in their lives.

Sharleen was born in Oshawa, Ontario and is predeceased by her parents Claude and Nina Press. The fourth of six daughters, she is predeceased by her sisters Diane Craig (Dave) and Gayle Brouse (Glen), and survived by her sisters Karon Falk (John), Fran Tassone (Tony) and Paula Priestly as well as many nieces and nephews. Sharleen adored her large family, and she was instrumental in planning and organizing all family gatherings.

She enjoyed many years raising her family before returning to work with the United Church of Canada, Hamilton Conference Office.

Sharleen was a social and active person who loved participating in many groups and clubs in Hamilton and visiting with treasured friends. She has been an active and loyal member of St. Andrew's United Church congregation in Hamilton for over 50 years. She was a member of The Dundas District Ladies Golf Association, The Rosedale Tennis Club, The Hamilton Tennis Club, many book clubs, and numerous other social groups.

During her retirement Sharleen enjoyed winters in the community of Sun and Lake in Sebring, Florida where she made many dear friends while continuing to join clubs and social groups. Her presence will be missed whenever we gather but her love will always be felt.

A funeral service followed by a visitation with family will be held on Thursday, February 24th at 1pm at St. Andrews Church, 479 Upper Paradise Rd., Hamilton, ON L9C 5E2.

The service will be livestreamed for those who wish to attend virtually. Please see the link provided on the funeral home website. Guests are required to be fully vaccinated and to wear a mask to attend the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Andrew's United Church are appreciated at https://standrewsunitedhamilton.ca/giving/

Ian, so sorry to hear about the loss of Sharleen. My condolences to you and your family. I had not seen Sharleen for many years but worked with her at Canadian Drawn Steel, then regularly as a member of Unit 6 at St. Andrews. May your memories bring you comfort.
