Sheila VERLAAN Obituary

1932 - 2021
Sheila will be sadly missed by her family, son Bart, daughter Diane (Brian), four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Born in Toronto, she spent her school years at St. Joseph's Convent girl's school, then graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours BA. Sheila enjoyed a 30-year career as a high school teacher and librarian. During that time she helped establish and run three high school libraries in Ontario. Students and staff were always welcome to her very busy library, sometimes called "The Heart of the School". Upon retirement she found time to play with her grandchildren, participated in neighbourhood politics and attended many theatre productions and concerts. She loved to travel, garden, play the piano and spend time with her friends. She was an avid reader and bridge player. Sheila was an active member of the Ancaster Seniors Centre where she attended the exercise classes twice a week for many years. She was also a member of the Ancaster Garden Club and Book club. After moving from Dundas, Sheila spent her last years at the Meadowlands Retirement Community in Ancaster. She passed away in her 90th year after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husbands Ian Parsons (1987) and after almost 30 years together, Ted Verlaan (2018). In view of COVID, a small private family funeral will take place. Arrangements entrusted to Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home, Ancaster (905) 648-3852.

Planted Trees

Lucy-Jane Hannaford

December 30, 2021

To Sheila´s Family:
Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the recent death of your mother. Your mom was an active member of The Thesaurus Club in Ancaster. I missed her contribution to the Club when she no longer attended. I think the last time I saw Sheila was by chance in Dundas. She and some family members were coming up Picone´s driveway as I was heading down. I was delighted to see her.
These blows are never easy to bear, yet memories both sustain one at the time and enrich future days. The grandchildren will miss their grandmother very much but fortunately they have enjoyed her presence and love.
Sincerely,
Lucy-Jane Hannaford
