Shirley WISSENZ Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Anne Wissenz (nee Tonkin) on Saturday, November 12, 2022, in her 89th year of life. Beloved wife of Richard for 70 years, Shirley is now reunited with her lifelong love after his passing in April. Devoted parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, Shirley and Richard built a beautiful life for five loving children in their lifelong home of Stoney Creek: Rick (Darlene), Michael (Rachelle), Martin (Elizabeth), Rebecca (Bill), and Laura (Frank). Her love of reading led to a long and distinguished career with the Hamilton-Wentworth Public Library. Adored by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, "Poppy" instilled a love of learning, laughter, cooking, and travel that will be a lasting legacy for all of us. Though greatly missed, the family is comforted that sweethearts, Shirley and Richard, are together again. Friends will be received at the DONALD V. BROWN FUNERAL HOME, 36 Lake Avenue Drive, Stoney Creek, on Thursday, November 17th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, November 18th at 10:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Mountview Gardens Cemetery, Stoney Creek.

A great mom and family friend of my parents. They lived right across the street. I had many lovely dinners with the Wissenz kids who were a very large family of their own. She raise a wonderful bunch of adults and still remained one of the prettiest women on the planet. The only time she had a problem with me was her daughter Rebecca asked me to draw little tattoos in ballpoint pen on her arm. I did it and she wasn't so much angry as a bit put out. I later became kind of a famous artist. Might have been worth something later :) Life's crazy river of time. If we have only one goal it is to pass on our passion for life and that she did. To all the kids, a wonderful life moving forward. Hugs to you all.
