Theresa FINLAY Obituary

June 11, 1929—March 9, 2021 Terry died peacefully March 9th at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital in Burlington, in her 92nd year. This followed a valiant three year struggle with health issues that caused her great pain and stole her quality of life. She remained optimistic and cheerful to the end, a poignant example of courage and dignity despite the suffering she endured. Terry is survived by her daughter Lynda Finlay (John Jessop) and her beloved grandchildren Kim Finlay (Nola Lacey) and Christine Finlay (Daniel Jacobs), all of Toronto. Terry was predeceased by Kim and Christine's Dad, her only son David Finlay, in 2020, and by her husband James Finlay in 2010. Terry came from French Canadian Northern Ontario. She was old enough to remember the miracle birth of the Dionne Quintuplets not far from her childhood home. Her family moved to Southern Ontario where she met and married Jim. They relocated several times for his work as a retail executive, living in Montreal Quebec, St. John's Newfoundland, and Windsor Ontario. They finally settled permanently in Burlington Ontario, where Terry was a faithful parishioner at St. Raphael's Catholic Church. Terry was the epitome of integrity. She always knew what was right and did her best to uphold that standard. Her other standout quality was her ability to make friends. She loved people. She remembered names and faces and even if she only met you once, you were important to her. Her network of friends was global, thanks to the many years she and Jim wintered in their beloved Barbados and the ties they formed with international travelers. She was a loyal and generous friend and her close group of best friends got together weekly to play cards for more than 50 years. She loved to entertain and when she hosted you at her home, you never went away hungry. She cherished family as well as friends and was a loving mother, grandmother, wife, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and mother-in-law. When her two adult children became disabled (David by a stroke, Lynda by multiple sclerosis) she went to heroic and extraordinary lengths to make their lives easier and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The family extends a special heart-felt thank you to Mary Perley and Eric Tibbett, Terry's kind neighbours, who helped her so wonderfully throughout the pandemic and in her final months. Terry has been cremated, and a celebration of her life will be arranged after Covid 19. Terry was an exceptional kind lady and everything that was stated in her obituary. We were Barbados friends for years and also spent time with them in Burlington. We have been fortunate to have had both Terry and Jim in our lives. She has left us - but will always be in our thoughts.

I’m so sorry to hear about Terry. She and Jim were friends of my parents, Horst and Betty Borger, for many years. I remember them both from many, many parties. They were good people.

We knew and loved Terry as her family at Pirate's Inn. Throughout her many stays with us, and even when her health was not at it best, Terry was always positive, kind, courteous and thoughtful. She treated our crew respectfully and brought into her "home" at Pirate's Inn many of her friends who were extensions of her many friends who also called Pirate's Inn home. We hoped that we would see her sometime in the future. Please know that she remains a part of our story and that she was well loved by us all.

May she rest in peace.

Thank you for sending your ma's obituary. Aunt Terry was right there in front of me as I read it and then thought of her. A Terry much younger, relaxed, I could hear her speaking, her laughter, catch the cigarette smoke, her quick movements, her energy. My vivacious, full of life Francophone aunt. I loved how she said each of our names, like each time was a present, peppering her conversation with that person's name. I loved that. No one else did that like Aunt Terry.
Thank you for allowing me to catch that sparkle from her. It was a blessing, a mitzvah if you will. She lived well, she embodied her life, and wore her body out with that full life. She lived. Until she couldn't. No one does better than that.
She had so much joie de vivre. Martin brother could not get over how she called him, more than once, once his final diagnosis was made known. And really spoke to him, and offered to come and be with him, to do whatever she could. He kept saying, "no one else did that", (well apart from me and Mark), and said she had courage and heart. Yes she did. Heart, courage and much bon ami. She was une bonne amie. It was her gift to each of us.
A` bientot

I have only just heard about Mrs. Finlay's passing and wanted to pass on my deepest condolences to her family. I have only warm memories of growing up across the street from the Finlay's and all the camping adventures at the lake. May god bless you at this difficult time.

Very sad to hear about the passing of Mrs. Finlay. I had many fun times singing around the campfire at Clear Lake with Jim and Terry and Dave and Lynda. Lots of laughs and talk of politics abounded at the Finlay campfire.

Our sincere condolences to the Finlay family. We lived beside Terry and Jim on Montego. Jim was very quiet and loved his garden, while Terry was very friendly and loved to talk. They were good neighbours. Rest In Peace.

Terry was such a kind and caring person. When I had the privilege of having a meal, or staying at the Finlay home with my best friend Lynda, Terry always made me feel like family. We always had lively, interesting conversations and laughed often. We ate well (and probably too much!) Terry will be greatly missed by many. Lynda I send you love and will talk to you soon.
