Thomas HURD Obituary

Husband (Rita Bertoldi), father (Emilia Hurd), father-in-law (Kevin Cooper), new grandfather to Baby Linden, brother (Molly, Jack, Jim) uncle, colleague, friend and mentor, cyclist extraordinaire, Commonwealth Scholar and Professor of Mathematics at McMaster - died way too soon on April 28, 2022, at age 65.
A bolt from the blue - two weeks after the birth of his first grandchild, a few weeks after negotiating his retirement, Tom was diagnosed with a brain tumour on March 20, 2022, later to be confirmed to be a Grade 4 glioblastoma. It consumed Tom with devastating speed despite his steely resolve. Strong arms and loving hearts surrounded him and kept him at home, until his last few days at St Peter's Hospital. Fellow cyclists became fellow walkers. Meals silently appeared to keep "Team Tom" going. This daily grind proved much harder than going up Sydenham Hill or the "Hurd Locker". These were Tom's favourite bike climbs with his cycling buddies, the Westdale Wastrels.
Thanks to connectors of dots: Dear friends, doctors, nurses and the McMaster community mobilized teams with lightning "Tom-time" speed to donate his beautiful math brain to the Sheila Singh lab at McMaster University. We are honouring Tom's inquiring mind and generosity of spirit to help advance the study and research of this awful disease.

Tom was cremated at Circle of Life Centre in Dundas. A celebration honouring Tom will happen at a later date. A death notice will be published in The Globe and Mail on Saturday, May 7.

A small mercy was that all his family was able to be with him at the end. He is greatly missed.

I attended Tom's mini-course on systemic risk at IPAM, UCLA in 2015. I still remember how he stood out for his energy and enthusiasm. He's such a big loss for the math finance community. My sincere condolences.

I was startled at how sad I felt at Tom's passing, and still do. He was lovely to work and laugh with. Also we discovered that we had grown up in the same neighbourhood in Ottawa and had a good time sharing stories of our favourite childhood haunts.

I have many fond memories from my childhood of my time spent at the Hurd-Bertoldi house. Tom always had a big grin on his face and was so welcoming. Thank you for the good memories

I attended McMaster as a grad student in the Maths dept. in 2017-2018 and had the privilege to TA for prof. Hurd for a semester. The highlight was when he asked me to help cater a school party at his house. Tom and his wife Rita were lovely and afterward sent me on my way with enough leftovers and Halloween candy for a week! Deeply saddened and stunned by this news. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. RIP Prof. Hurd.

Rita and family. Words can't begin to explain the sorrow we are feeling at his loss. I'm still in disbelief that my "boss" is gone just like this with no goodbye nothing. He's sorely missed and will be forever remembered and loved. Our thoughts are with you.

I knew Tom as a fellow grad student at Oxford in the late 1970s, but last saw him during a visit to McMaster in 2005. His many friends are deeply shocked and saddened by his sudden passing. I just hope that knowing that he was so widely admired and respected will provide you with some small solace after you have had time to thoroughly grieve his loss.
