Vijay Jhamb Memoriam

Vijay Gopal Jhamb passed away at Hamilton General Hospital, surrounded by his family, at the age of 73.

Vijay was born on October 3rd, 1948, in New Delhi, India to parents Suraj Bhan and Kaushalya. He was extremely intelligent, always finishing at the top of his class, and then attending The Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi for Mechanical Engineering. In the late 1960s, Vijay came over to the University of Connecticut for his Master's degree, before moving to Canada.

He loved numbers and statistics, and enjoyed sharing interesting facts when it came to football and baseball. This love also made him a natural at the game of bridge, as he was an avid member of the local bridge community. He taught lessons at the Burlington Senior Center, as well as ran his own game at the Mount Hamilton Bridge Club. His wit and humour always made him stand out in a room, sometimes a little bit too much!

Vijay was a very loving father and his children were always his priority. When his daughter, Geeta, lived in Toronto and would come to Hamilton for a weekly visit, he would drive her back to her condo every Sunday evening. He would also spend every evening watching shows like Star Trek and Monk with his son, Amit.

Vijay is survived by his wife, Manjula, his son Amit Jhamb, and his daughter and husband Geeta Jhamb and James Eric Davis.

A private cremation and service has already been held, but a Memorial Bridge game and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date (TBD). In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hamilton Food Share in his name.

The world is a much sadder place without Vijay, but we know he is with us in every step we take. His memory and love will be with us forever.

There are some people that are a constant in our lives and you think that they will be there forever. When I retired over 8 years ago, bridge was something I considered but having learned to play back in university, I didn´t think I had much to learn. Was I wrong. Not only did Vijay get me to look at bridge in a different way, he inspired me to look at life as well from a different perspective. He was not aware of the influence he had....he was just a very caring and resourceful person who made everyone feel that they were important. Thank you Vijay for being you and for all of the fond memories.

Vijay was a very special person in our lives. He was a brilliant bridge teacher with an incredible sense of humour and his classes were so much fun (often at our expense!). I will never play a hand of bridge without thinking of him and all the rules and regulations he painstakingly taught us. We feel very privileged to have known Vijay and will always treasure our memories of him. Our condolences to his family. June Findlay & Ken Herrington

Vijay taught me bridge many years ago and was a wonderful teacher. He had patience, and a touch of impatience which endeared him to his many students. A charming gentleman who will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure to meet him. I am certain his early passing will be a great loss to his family. Just thinking of him, makes me smile. What a legacy!

Talk about a memory!!! As instructor in Burlington, Vijay could glance at your 13-card bridge hand---just a glance---and return 5 minutes later to recall exactly what you held in your hand---this among twenty players in the class.
