Vito Bommarito Obituary

December 26, 1953 - August 21, 2022
With extreme sadness and broken hearts, we announce the sudden death of our beloved brother Vito in North Vancouver, BC. Predeceased by brother Salvatore (1982), mother Grace (2011) and father Pasquale (2020), Vito will be deeply missed by his siblings, Joanne (Ian) Dunbar; Connie (Tony) Materno; Ross (Marta); Mary (Bill) Brouwer and Margaret (Ian) Townsend. And by nephews and nieces Anthony Materno (Jessica Murray, Gabriella, Samuel); Amanda Materno (Anthony DiFlumeri); Jovianne (James L'Homme), Sam and Lyla Bommarito and David, Mark, and Frank Dunbar. Vito was loved by all those he met through his journeys around the world. For Vito what mattered was not what he had in life but who. Friends and family were central to who he was, enriching his own life as well as those around him. There are too many to list but special mention to longtime friends Larry Llewellyn, Vito's lifetime buddy, Sean Sullivan who helped us start settling his affairs, Steve Debowski and Butch and Carol Nelson. If a man is judged by the company he keeps, then Vito had a wonderful life indeed. Vito savoured the day and always looked forward to tomorrow's adventures. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, his journey took him from basketball stardom at Cathedral and Guelph University. From superyachts as chef and Coast Guard crew on the world's oceans to shipyard supervisor in North Vancouver where he retired in 2019. Along the way he lived, worked, and played as far as Australia, Hawaii, Malaysia, Italy and the Northwest Territories before settling in British Columbia. We are eternally grateful for having the short time we had with Vito and the wonderful memories. Please join us for a funeral mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Grimsby on Saturday September 17, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. (live on FB) Thank you to Fr. Rico for all your support. In lieu of flowers, a donation to St. Joseph's, 135 Livingston Ave. Grimsby, ON L3M 5J6 or etransfer to [email protected] or to a Charity of Your Choice.

So sad to hear of Vito's passing. We were such good friends in 1981 to 1986 - Hay River and Edmonton. Vito was a class act indeed!

Condolences to the family. Knew Vito back in the day at U. of G. and ran into him at a Grey Cup in Calgary; also met up for a few NCAA finals as well at a local pub in Vancouver or on Mr. Washington's yacht. R.I.P.

Got to know Vito when he moved to Alberta and worked at the Keg with him. We played many years of Basketball together and found Vito to be a stand up guy who developed deep relationships. I am certainly glad he was part of my life and cherish the lessons that he taught me!

I cannot put into words how much I loved and respected this man.
Played basketball with him in the Northwest Territories from the mid 80´s to 90´s. We lost touch but he was never too far from my thoughts. I´m empty without his presence. Sleep well my brother - see you on the other side. Davis
