A. MUTCH Obituary

A. DONALD C. MUTCH Passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on July 5, 2012. He will be forever loved, forever missed by his wife Jan Hartford and son Tony Mutch. Don is survived by Tony's mother Carole; sister Kathrine (David) Mackie and niece Kirsten Mackie of Edinburgh, Scotland; his parents-in-law Max and Dee Peterson, his sister-in-law Jill (Gene) Peterson and niece Annika Peterson of Chicago. Don was born August 3, 1948 in Falkirk, Scotland. He proudly attended George Heriot's School and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a MA in Economics. As a young man he immigrated to Canada where he began a long and successful career in the banking industry. Don achieved senior executive positions during a long career at the Bank of Montreal (Senior Vice President Asset Management Services) and finally at Sun Life Financial (Chief Investment Officer). Don attained the Institute for Corporate Directors certification and served on many boards of directors during his career and most recently as a director of Via Rail Canada Inc. In addition to his distinguished career, many will remember Don for his sense of style, design and art, his passion for M5's, his love of a fine dinner party followed by a fine cigar and for his beloved Irish Wolfhounds, Caitlin and Fitzwilliam. The family would like to thank Dr. John Granton, Toronto General Hospital, for his empathy and care for Don over the last several years and the nurses and doctors in the Medical Intensive Care Unit at St. Michael's Hospital Toronto for their attention and care during this final illness. Heartfelt thanks also to his friends, Finn Madsen (Niagara-on-the-Lake) and John Shelley (Toronto) for their steadfast friendship to Don particularly during the last year. Family and friends will gather on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 between the hours of 5 and 8 p.m. at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Ave. W., Toronto (2 lights west of Yonge St.). A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel. Reception to follow. I am so sorry to hear of Don's passing. He and I were friends and colleagues at BMO for years. Don provided me with invaluable advice for an investment fund for my younger sister in the early 90's and I can honestly say that he has proven his expertise with the success of this fund.
I loved his M5's and we constantly talked about cars.
I shall miss him greatly. My sincerest condolences to Tony and Jan.

I will always remember Don as one of my dearest friends and the quintessential host. Who can ever forget those memorable Robbie Burn dinners that Don and Jan hosted.

Don's Address to the Haggis was nothing less than pure theater. Dressed in the full Scottish Reglia, Don read aloud (in the true Scottish dialect)--"“Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o' the pudding-race!” In the background was the supporting bagpipe music.
I had the privilege of sitting with Don on many occasions covering local politics, and other global news items while sitting outside in their back garden. Don truly enjoyed his friends, family and guests and always made each and everyone welcome. He was a kind, thoughtful man and a true gentleman. You will be missed dearly by both Shirley and I.

God be with you.

Your friends, Finn and Shirley Madsen

Upon hearing the news of Don's passing, I would like to extend my heartfelt and deepest condolences to Jan and members of Don's family. It was an honour and a privilege to call Don a friend and enjoy his camaraderie, which included countless conversations spanning from cigars and art to capital markets and investments. In today's age Don was a rarity, a true gentleman, who demonstrated kindness, respect, intellect, eloquence, and tact.

I had the privilege of meeting with Mr. Mutch several times while he was a Director at Via Rail Canada. He always had time to listen to an employee, to be kind and steadfast. He will be missed.
