Afzal SULEMAN Obituary

SULEMAN, P.Eng., AFZAL (AL) F. December 30, 1958 - January 18, 2019 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a dear son, husband, father and brother. Afzal wanted all his family, friends and colleagues to know that he led a most wonderful 60 years of life with the last 30 years devotedly married to his beautiful and loving wife Anisha and together raised two beautiful children, Adam and Sabrina, who have made them so proud in so many ways. He requests that his passing be truly seen as a celebration of a life well lived and loved and that he treasured each and every moment of it. Afzal was an accomplished, ethical and very proud professional engineer who took immense pride in the contributions made by his staff at the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal where he enjoyed a most fulfilling career in multiple roles culminating as Director. He was very deeply touched by the many kind expressions of support and prayers as he fought his courageous battle with stage 4 Melanoma. The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Hogg and his team at Princess Margaret Hospital for their support and valiant efforts using latest immunotherapy advances to stop the aggressive advances of the cancer. Should there be a desire, In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests a donation to PMH Foundation or the Melanoma Network of Canada. An Ismaili Faith funeral will be held on January 24, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at 695 Middlefield Rd., Scarborough, ON M1V 5B8.

I had the absolute honour of being a colleague of Al's during his tenure on the York Region Children's Aid Society's Board of Directors. Al was a very passionate and thoughtful man who made a huge contribution to the most vulnerable residents of York Region - our children. I am absolutely heartbroken for his family, who he always spoke of with love and pride. He touched my life, and I will always treasure our friendship. Rest In Peace, Al. ❤

I had the pleasure of working with Al as his Admin Assistant at the OFMEM. Before I started working for him, I asked some co-workers what Al was like. The most frequent descriptor was "gentleman" - and it was a truly apt description. Beyond that, he was supportive, encouraging, and had a great sense of humour, as well as too many other qualities to list. He is missed and will continue to be missed.

My deepest, deepest condolences to the Suleman family.

My deepest condolences to the entire family. Anisha and Sabrina. As I said when we met in Niagara in Novemver Al was a great help to me when I was first promoted into Fire Prevention in North York. He was always available to answer any question I had and give me advice when ever needed. He was a true professional with no motive other than fire safety. Adam, I believe that your father was the best example of a gentleman that I ever met in the fire service. I am sure that example will do you well as you go through life.
I know Al will be missed, mostly by you, but I know that he is in a better place and the pain is over.

There are very few who spend their working lives in genuine service to others, and fewer yet whose legacy amounts to countless lives being saved. Through his tireless leadership, expertise and determination, Al lead the development of life-saving Fire Code, smoke alarm and CO alarm improvements that have, and will continue to save lives for years to come.

Al also lead much of the Vulnerable Occupancy legislation in Ontario - an achievement befitting of someone whose heart was as big as his expertise.

I will forever remember Al as a consummate professional and a genuine gentleman. Al always greeted me with a warm smile and a firm, welcoming handshake. He was an example of never-ending grace and calm.

I consider it an honour and privilege to have known and worked alongside Al Suleman.

We are deeply saddened by the news of Al's passing following his courageous battle with cancer. A good friend and colleague, Al was a kind and gentle man offering his wonderfull sense of humour and positive spirit to all he encountered. He spoke proudly of his family and and their aspirations for the future. His influence on Public Safety will live on as he would remind us all of the need for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in our homes. In the last months of Al's battle with cancer, we spoke by phone a number of times and I was struck by his positive attitude and resilience in the face of his health challenges, a true role model for all. Al will be missed by so many and we have been blessed to have known such a fine man. Al climbed and conquered one of the tallest mountains in the world, what a feat, and was an example of what can be done when life's challenges face us head on. Our thoughts and prayers are with Al, his loving wife and family at this time. Gods speed my friend.

I, too, first met Al when he worked for Scarborough. At that time I was (as was he) a much younger fire prevention officer, who was introduced to him as one who would examine certain plans prior to our department taking them on as part of our inspection duties.
Imagine my delight, when I was hired on to work for the Office of the Fire Marshal, to learn that Al Suleman had now become a colleague. I have very much appreciated, and been privileged, to have had Al Suleman as a professional friend.
I have added a now-favourite photo of perhaps the only time he and I were caught on camera together (which, as I recall, may have been the first time he had the opportunity to wear his official uniform in public).
To Al's family: Thank you for helping him to be the joy to others that he was (and still is)! Please accept my sincere condolences...

I want to express my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Al. I worked for and with Al for several years. Al was a wonderful man. He was kind, gentle and his tremendous integrity was evident all the time. I was so shocked and saddened to hear of his passing.

Al was a mentor to me on another front. I was diagnosed with cancer 3 years ago and Al was a tremendous support to me. Even when he was struggling with his own treatments, he was keen on finding out how I was and discussing my own treatment options. Most recently, in December, he was supportive and caring when i messaged him about my sister in law being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

I want you to know how much respect I had for Al and how important he was in my life. He will be missed. And remembered.

My thoughts will be with you and your family through this difficult time.

I worked with Al at the Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management from 2011 to 2016. He was an important leader for Fire Protection Engineering.
