ALBERT GLADSTONE Obituary

GLADSTONE, ALBERT With great sadness, we share the passing of Albert Arthur Gladstone. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Perry, stepdaughters Rebecca and Robin, grandsons Tibor and Adam, nieces and nephew, aunt, cousins, and many adoring friends. He was 91 years old. Albert lived a long and fruitful life. He loved fishing, folklore, costumes, storytelling, dancing, and music and cherished the memories and things that represented them. Albert was a beacon for thousands as one of Canada's foremost folk dance teachers and helped cultivate the multinational spirit and culture Toronto is famous for. He touched many more lives as a flea market philosopher and master contrarian. He was generous, compassionate, and challenging to friends and family as only Al could be. He will be dearly missed. A memorial celebration will be held in the summer. Donations in Albert's name can be made online to University Settlement House, Ralph Thornton Community Centre, or Danforth Jewish Circle (for DJC please specify: Refugee Assistance) at: canadahelps.org/en/ For information on the service please visit: benjaminsparkmemorialchapel.ca

Al was the first to introduce me to the Toronto dance scene when I moved here from Montreal. He was warm and welcoming and a good friend. I will never forget him!
Rest inPeace, Al.

A few of the van Leeuwen's have gathered together for the holidays. Mom(Bep, a fellow folk dancer from Nova Scotia) commented that she tried to call on his birthday. She did talk to him last year. So I thought I would check the web. We are very sorry to hear of Al's passing. He and mom were the same age.
There are many happy memories of dancing at NS dance camp as well as a few excursions to T.O.
Mom has had a long standing habit of calling each December to pass on warmest wishes on his birthday. Now the warmest wishes are for the family. Take care, Sabina

Hope that you can still receive this

I´m so sorry to hear of Albert´s passing! I met Al through his folk dance group, when I moved to Toronto from Montreal (ca. 1970). I had been a folk dancer in Montreal most of my life, and was looking for folk dancing here in Toronto.
Al was so warm and welcoming, it was a pleasure to be part of his group!
Eventually I had to stop my folk dancing due to the birth of my son and pressures of work, but always had warm memories of Al and his folk dance group! He helped to make Toronto feel like "home".
No doubt he will be organizing a dance group of heavenly angels at this moment!
Rest In Peace Al! You will be sorely missed!

So very sorry to hear of Al's passing. I have many memories of great encounters with him at various events, especially at the Ralph Thornton Centre. All the best to Marilyn & the youngers.

We are thinking of you and Al. Perry's eulogy captured the essence of his father very well. Al loved to ask me a questions and proceed to teach me the real answer. He was also a smooth ballroom dancer.
