ALBERT HARRINGTON Obituary

HARRINGTON, ALBERT KEVIN 1934 - 2023 Albert Kevin Harrington, known to family and friends as "Kevin," "Dada" and "Legend," died on February 19, 2023, at age 88 following a series of health setbacks, including melanoma. He was with very close friends through his final days, and was en route to his Toronto home when he passed, which is noteworthy considering his love of travel. Kevin was one of six children of Frank and Alice (née McKay). His younger brother, Tom, lives in Edmonton. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Bryan, Maureen, Joan and Elaine; and his beloved niece, Linda (Maureen's daughter). His circle of family and friends was ever-growing as he kept in touch with the younger generations of nieces and nephews, and through his social connections with newcomers, language learners and travellers (he was an enthusiastic host for the couchsurfer network). He grew up in many homes in and near Toronto, but his deepest roots were in Scarborough, where he taught geography and led the library department at Agincourt Collegiate. He was keenly interested in flags and heraldry, and was for years a leading figure in the field of vexillology. His dedication to Flagscan and international flag organizations was a great source of pride, scholarly fellowship and lifelong friends. Kevin also had a passion for languages and was acquiring new skills even into his eighties. He was most recently working on Russian and Turkish. His intellectual pursuits (he was an expert on first-names, birds and history) were augmented by a tremendous sense of humour (he loved word-play) and a thoroughly outgoing personality. His greatest joy was simply being in the company of others, sharing good times and forging enduring friendships. Family and friends are invited to a Remembrance Gathering in Toronto on March 18, 2023. It will be hosted by Kevin's very dear friends in Toronto, and it will be an informal event. Details on time and location will soon be shared by family and friends, and will be posted on Kevin's Facebook page.

As an early member of CFA. Kevin guided my interest in flags.
He was great.
He leaves a whole in the flag groups.

If you love flags, you loved Kevin. Kevin was a super people person. Who could ask for more.

Death comes to us all, yet it is always a painful shock when someone one loves passes. I still can´t believe that Kevin Harrington, ebullient, extraordinary, vital, vibrant, larger than life flag authority, dear friend is no more. A huge and unfathomable loss to the world of Vexillology. We, in India will feel the void as Kevin was most active member of Facebook group "Flags - Study and Library (FISCal)". He will no longer send his scholarly articles on aspects of Flags. I am sure we will join again wherever he is now and wave our Invisible flag sending best wishes.

A wonderful teacher. This was one of the most interesting people I had ever met. I was lucky to be one of his students at ACI and work in his library.
