I found myself thinking of you, Michael, your wife and daughter and your son just last week. It was 4 am and I was sitting in a chair beside my own son, whom you helped bring into my life 15 years ago. We were in the emerg department and I was praying he would fall asleep and be granted some reprieve from his fevered mind and broken heart. I was reflecting on our sessions with you years ago, as we moved toward his adoption and how it was more a child rescue than a blessed, celebratory process. Thought that would come much later. I was thinking of the sudden and unfathomable loss of AJ from your life and how grateful I felt to be sitting in quiet grace by the side of my brave and broken child. This is not all of who you are, I whispered into his ear. There is meaning in this chapter of your life, our lives, as challenging and confusing and frightening as it may be, I told him. When we are in a calmer place, Son, I want you to meet the man who was instrumental in bringing us together after such a long wait. A man whose own heart and life were filled with love for a son who was taken from him far far too soon. A man who also continues to sit in quiet grace with a parent love still growing in his heart. I just heard the terrible news. I am so thankful for having taught AJ in his younger years. His beaming smile, sweet and respectful disposition, and humorous creativity made him a bright light in the classroom. I have particularly fond memories of my time with AJ (which feels like yesterday) and agree with news reports that he was a child whom any parent would be proud to call their own. Teachers are not supposed to have favourites, but we do. And AJ is one of mine. He will always be in my thoughts.

AJ was able to brilliantly accomplish in his 16 short years, what most people take a lifetime to achieve. I have no easy words to describe the sorrow I feel for your family. With two teens of my own I cannot begin to imagine the void AJs passing leaves in your small family. Knowing what a kind, caring and sharing person he was makes it only that much more cruel and confusing. Every interaction I had with him showed me what a fine young man he was and what a wonderful family he was raised in. His kind of self-confidence can only have come from the love he felt from family. Dear Michael, Carole and Taylor
You don't know me but we are in a sense connected through family. I am Frances Blugerman's niece (her sister's daughter). And while we have never met, Michael I have heard so many wonderful things about you through the adoption world as I myself have adopted two children internationally, and I have many friends who have adopted through you.
I wanted to reach out to all of you to express my sincere condolences over this unthinkable and horrible tragedy, losing your wonderful son AJ. In speaking with Frances, and reading all about him, he seems like he was a remarkable person and someone I wished I would have known. I am heartbroken for all of you. You and AJ have been foremost in my thoughts ever since I heard the news.
With the unbearable pain of losing AJ, I hope that in time you are able to find solace and comfort in the wonderful memories you have of him, and of the incredible way in which he touched so many people's lives.

This has been a week of great sadness. We were not fortunate to know AJ personally,however,we have watched and listened to all the beautiful words and stories shared by friends of AJ.
There are no words to express our families sadness for the loss of your AJ.
This world has lost one very special boy and Heaven has gained and Angel.

My daughter is a grade 9 student at Bayview Glen. She met AJ one day at school. He made such an impression that when she came home that day she told us about the friendly exchange with the charismatic boy.
This tragedy has been foremost in our thoughts this past week. We hope that you will some solace in the many wonderful memories you have and as expressed by so many.

There are no words that can ever take away the pain of losing someone so dear—especially so unexpectedly. I know that this letter will be just one of many to find you in this time of grief. Even so, I felt that I must also offer my heartfelt condolences in the hopes that you may find some comfort in our memories of your son AJ.
The first time I met your son I was struck by his zest for life. His cheerful nature, kindness were a breath of fresh air. Our two son will miss him, playing hidden seeks and running around the grass from house to house when we came to visit other neighbours.
It seems so unfair to have lost such a bright light in this world, so suddenly. If it's any consolation to you, we sincerely believe that our lives were bettered by knowing your son AJ. There are not many young people these days that I would want my teenage children to emulate, but what I read and know of AJ, he was certainly not in that category. I hope my children will honour his memory by always being kind, thoughtful, and down-to-earth, as he was. I know you must be so proud of what AJ was able to share with us all in his time here, which was sadly too short.

I've heard of the terrible accident of A.J. from my son's skating coach Yutaka.
I still can not believe nor accept all the things happened on you and your family, also can not find out the words to say you.

A.J. you were loved by everyone and taken from us much too early. My heart is truly aching for your family and friends. I met you only briefly, but I liked you very much. My son Connor was very fond of you, his time in Costa Rica with you brought the two of you closer together as friends and he is devastaed by your passing. So many will miss you; memories of your smaile, your laughter and your character will remain a part of them always.
