André GOMBAY Obituary

GOMBAY, André - (May 4, 1933 - February 28, 2014) happy philosopher. He loved music, teaching, the news, movies, laughter, walking, riding his bicycle, and above all, his family. Loving and much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be sorely missed. A celebration of his times will be held in early May, at a date and place to be announced. Donations in his memory to the federal NDP or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by his family.

I will miss André greatly. I looked to him as a model of philosophical writing and teaching. He was gracious, patient, kind, lively, insightful, and vigorous. I owe him a lot.

André was a wonderful colleague and teacher, and his style of doing philosophy always afforded a kind of magic. He would begin a talk (and by all accounts, pretty much any lecture) with what appeared to be a gentle reminder of familiar territory, delivered in a meditative style that suggested that he was just thinking it through on the spot; but you before you knew it you found yourself in a strange and novel intellectual landscape, in which new vistas unfolded, and fresh questions were raised that invariably led to fascinating conversations. His kindness and generosity, like his intellectual curiosity, were inexhaustible. I was abroad when I heard the news. And every day brings more reasons to miss him.

André was a gentle and generous soul. I had the privilege of being his TA for one semester, and learned a lot from him. He cared for his students and they loved him. We will miss you, André.

André spent one semester in Amsterdam as an exchange scholar while I was a graduate student there. I disagreed about an awful lot of things philosophical with him, but in that I learned a lot from him. He was the nicest, gentlest philosopher by far. It taught me to practice some intellectual humility and be open to the idea that others might have a point even if you disagree.
Thank you, André, for that valuable lesson.

I first met Andre at a workshop he hosted on Descartes at Toronto to which my advisor, Annette Baier, brought me along. He was an exemplar of how to have a serious and substantive, and respectful and human spirited philosophical discussion. I feel so fortunate that I had occasion to see this kind of interaction as a student, and to get to know Andre even just a little bit.

I had the good fortune to know and benefit from André when I was a graduate student in Philosophy at the University of Toronto, and then again when I was a faculty member of the department and his colleague. I will treasure the memories of his warmth, intelligence, and generosity.

André was one of the most generous philosophers I have ever had the pleasure to know. He delighted in sharing his ideas and helping to develop those of his colleagues and students. He taught and inspired generations of students and will be deeply missed.

André was a very learned man and a wonderful philosophical interlocutor. He lived an amazing life, and had much to recount about his personal experience of historical events. I'll always remember him.
