Andrew CARSWELL Obituary

CARSWELL, Andrew Gordon He served his country as a pilot in war and peace. Squadron Leader (Ret.) Andrew Gordon Carswell AFC, CD. 1923-2021 Andrew "Andy" Carswell passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre on July 25, 2021. He had been hospitalized after a fall and hip fracture in June. Andy lived life to its fullest and served his country as a pilot in war and peace. He was a beloved husband to his wife Dorothy and was much loved by his children and their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born in Bishop, California, in 1923. His Canadian parents returned to Toronto in his youth, to Balmy Beach where his grandparents were neighbours on Balsam Avenue. He joined the RCAF in WWII and became a Lancaster bomber pilot at 19. He was shot down in January 1943 and was a POW for the rest of the war at Stalag VIIIB in Lamsdorf, Silesia. He escaped twice, once making it to Stettin on the Baltic. He studied architecture at University of Toronto after the war and met his beloved wife, Dorothy "Dot" McCreadie, at a dance in Toronto. They were married in 1947 and lived together for 74 years until Andy's recent hospitalization. Andy never lost his love of flying. He worked as an instructor at Central Airways while a student and then rejoined the RCAF in 1948. He had an illustrious career as a RCAF pilot and was awarded the Air Force Cross for bravery by Queen Elizabeth for several daring rescues in British Columbia. Andy, his wife Dot and their five children moved frequently but returned to Toronto in the 1960s. He became a Transport Canada Aviation Inspector after his retirement from the RCAF in 1970 and they lived on Wanless Avenue in North Toronto. Andy was highly regarded as the Regional Air Safety Officer for Ontario and for his float plane expertise. His lively talks and lectures were very popular and much appreciated by the Ontario aviation community. After his second retirement in 1988, he and Dot moved to Washago, Ontario. They travelled extensively and attended many WWII veterans' reunions. They very much enjoyed their cottage on Kahshe Lake in Muskoka. Andy wrote a book, "Over the Wire" about his wartime experiences, which was published by Wiley in 2011. He was very proud that it was in libraries across Canada. Andy volunteered at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre for many years after they moved back to North Toronto and their Condo on Wanless Avenue in 2002. He often pushed wheelchairs for veterans often much younger than him. Andy is survived by his wife Dorothy; daughter Anne and husband Ian of Victoria and their daughters Skye, Hayley and Sheena; his daughter Marg of Kamloops passed away in 2017 of breast cancer and is survived by her husband Ross, their sons Peter, Vincent and daughter Christina; son Jim and wife Marika of Mississauga and his son Christopher; son John and wife Kim of Richmond Hill and their children Rachael, Colin and Natalie; and son Tim of Toronto. Andy and Dot have 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Andy lived a full life. He was very glad to spend his final days at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre where he had volunteered. They took amazing care of Andy for which his family will be forever grateful. There will be a small family ceremony at a date to be determined. Donations can be directed to the Andy Carswell Veterans House for homeless veterans in Ottawa (https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/multifaith-housing-initiative/) and/or the Sunnybrook Foundation in support of the Veterans Centre.

I never knew Mr Carswell but upon reading about his passing and extraordinary life, I decided to read his book, Over The Wire.
Being a bit of a History buff, I have read a number of WW ll books both Historical and Personal accounts.
Mr Carswell's book was fascinating and very well written. What I found most impressive was the young age at which he handled himself with courage and determination ( Pilot, POW, Escapee, and Death March Survivor) and yet he was just beginning his adult life going on to accomplish so much more.
Canadians have always been over shadowed by our American cousins but Mr Carswell was a true Canadian Hero and certainly represented the very best of the Greatest Generation.

I knew Andy and his lovely wife Dorothy when they lived in Washago for
a number of years. I met them when I moved there and joined the
Church. From that time I counted them as friends. Dorothy and I worked with Church projects and called on Andy to give us a hand.
Such an interesting person and considering what he had experienced
during the war there was something about his outlook and the
smile that said "good to be alive". It was a difficult time during that
war and glad that Andy had the fortitude to get back home.
I am so happy to have know Andy and his constant companion
Dorothy and will remember him when I re read his book I have on
my shelf.
Condolences to all of the family
Sincerely

Dear Dorothy, John and the rest of the Carswell family,

I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Mr. Andy Carswell's passing. Such an amazing life and one in which he touched so many lives not just of his own family, but of the many Canadians he served while a member of the RCAF. I always enjoyed watching videos of him talking about his life and experience and hearing John talk so fondly of his father.

My deepest condolences to you all and all of us here at True Patriot Love share in your sorrow. May he rest in peace.

Uncle Andy's joy, sharp wit and story-telling will be very much missed. We always looked forward to the Carswell family arrival between Christmas and New Year in Sarnia. The McCreadie sisters and their husbands had so much fun during their time together...dinner and dancing, visiting, ice skating and just plain fun and laughter. Uncle Andy was always assured to provide stories galore to put everyone in a jovial mood.
In later years we began to hear more of his time in the RCAF and his time spent as a POW. We are so grateful that he recorded this in his book.
Our heartfelt condolences to Aunt Dot and the whole family.

Colin and the Carswll family,
Daniel and I ( Marie-Pier parents) would like to offer you our deepest condolences on the death of your grandfather. Of all the reading I have done on him, he was a great man. Canada can count itself lucky to have had such an honorable man serve the country as he did.

Dear Dorothy and Carswell clan,

Claudette and I both send our warmest remembrances of your beloved husband Andy. I knew Andy as a fellow Transport Canada Safety "Suspector" at 4900 Yonge Street in the 1980s. He was most energetic, enthusiastic and wonderfully efficient in pressing the importance of safety in aviation upon one and all. When I spoke to you by phone some months ago, I was delighted to hear Andy "chiming in" from the background. May you and your loved ones know the peace of God at this trying time. No one understands the sorrow of losing a loved one like God. He "gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life." Much love, Gary and Claudette Weeks 416.816.4224

Andy Carswell was one of the elite members of the Greatest Generation. Imagine being a Lancaster pilot at the age of 19 and facing mortality night after night while flying over Germany. He was an amazing man and a role model for his awesome family. He led a full life and made every day count and will be missed by all.
