ANDREW OATES Obituary

OATES, ANDREW MARTIN 1954 – 2022 Andrew died on December 26th at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, following a lengthy struggle with heart disease. Andy was born in Nova Scotia, spent his childhood in Woodstock, Ontario, and his high school years in Toronto. He was a graduate of Western University in Computer Science. Andy was predeceased by his partner, Cathy Smith; his younger brother, Greg; and his parents, Grace and Ken Oates. He was loved and will be fondly remembered and missed by his brother, Julian Oates; sister, Judith Markle (Roy Hallock); nephews, niece, and grandnieces; as well as by his network of friends. Andy was a Torontonian all of his adult life. He had worked at Geac, and as an independent computer consultant. He particularly enjoyed his work as a project manager on the library system of the CNIB, and his time living in Paris, France, working for the French National Library system. Andy loved French culture, cuisine, and wine, and very much enjoyed conversing with his French-speaking friends. Andrew was a formidable intellect with an impressive memory and wide-ranging interests. He will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and quiet, thoughtful demeanor. Andy requested no formal memorial service. Arrangements will be made at a future date for his family and close friends to meet and raise a glass of fine wine or scotch in his honour. Memorial donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Sunnybrook Hospital, or a Charity of Your Choice would be greatly appreciated. The family would like to thank the many medical professionals who have cared for Andrew over the past number of years during his illness.

The Fyfe family will treasure many wonderful memories of Andy. In the early days celebrating Christmas Eves enjoying the infamous pastrami sandwiches; being at old A frame cottage where Andy could outsmart all of us in evening board games; attending family celebrations where we joked about having our own "Glen Campbell" there.
In later years, he participated in the run to honour Susan and when we met for lunches to catch up, it was always a memorable experience- a well researched restaurant where we enjoyed a wonderful meal paired with the perfect wine. The conversation was always engaging. Andy had so many interests and experiences and was a deep thinker.
He was in our lives for a long time but not long enough. He will be missed.

Just wanted to say goodbye to my old friend Andy, one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. A reserved and articulate man with a great sense of humour, the world has lost a great soul.

Andy was a great guy and a good friend. I first met him almost 50 years ago at Western University when we were in residence together at Westminster College. A brilliant man with a quick wit and a world of experience. Missing you terribly.

Andy was a lovely, gentle man. A big reader. And a big thinker. I miss him. Joanne M.
