Andrew Olynyk Obituary

OLYNYK, Andrew - February 2, 1993 -- October 14, 2009 Andrew Mark Olynyk was a wonderfully unique person who left us quietly and gently October 14, 2009 surrounded by love, and held by his family. The joy of loving Andrew filled the hearts of his parents, Daria and Mark and his cherished brother Stefan. Andrew was greatly supported and loved by his Baba and Dido, Olga and Walter Kuch, his aunt Catherine Olynyk, and treasured friend Helen Cikalo Jurychuk. He will be missed by his aunt, Christine Kuch Hailstone and Lorne. The glowing spark of his spirit will remain in our hearts forever. His great empathy, spirit, creativity, inspiration, flair and love of life and people was respected and cherished by all, including his classmates at Etobicoke School of the Arts and his CYMK friends at church. His passion for music and theatre was paramount in his life. Andrew used his intelligence and positive attitude to strive for excellence in everything that he did. He adopted this same outlook when undergoing treatments to deal with, and fearlessly battle his tumour. We are all thankful for the tremendous support of our friends and family which sustained and supported us throughout the last two years and especially to Dr. Dilip Mehta, Dr. Istvan Bukosza, Dr. Martin Chepesiuk, Dr. Susan Lemieux, Dr. Uri Tabori and the 8A Palliative care staff at Sick Kids Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Andrew Olynyk Memorial Fund, or Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Demetrius, or a chosen charity, would be greatly appreciated. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of Jane Subway, on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Prayer Service (Panakhyda) 7 p.m. Sunday. The Orthodox Rite of Funeral to be served at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 3338 Lakeshore Blvd. W. on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 10 a.m.

Dear Daria ("Kuch"), Marko, and Stefan,
I did not know your children well, as I had moved away from Toronto by the time they were born. I enjoyed seeing them in church at St. Demetrius whenever I was home singing in the choir, and my mum, Stevie, ("malenka" to Daria), always regaled me with stories of them being so adorable in church. The tributes to Andriyko are so touching...I cannot imagine the depth of the sadness of your loss. I am so sorry I was not able to be with you for the funeral, but I only heard your sad news from mum the evening before. May your memories sustain you forever, may his spirit always live in your hearts, may you find peace in our cherished church, and may you someday be able to smile when you look at all your beautiful photos. It will take some time, but it will come. With much love and many prayers, from Stevie and me.

I pray for Andrews family that you may have comfort in your loss and suffering, but also hope, in the reassurance that through Jesus Christ we all be united with Him when He returns. Never have I spent such little time with a person but been so heavily impacted by them. The way Andrew would welcome anyone and everyone into his life, and the way he never failed to have a positive attitude and carry a smile on your face. He had an evident passion for everything in life, especially music, you were gifted. He was in inspiration to myself and my peers, and for that I can do nothing but thank him. In his short time with us, he touched more people than some do in a lifetime, and that’s saying something. There is nothing I want more than for him to fulfill all his hopes and dreams in peace. By knowing him I have known an angel, and there is no doubt that he will never be forgotten.

Andrew, I wish you the very best. Thank you so much for everything. My condolences go out to all your family and friends.

Our thoughts are with you all at this time. We seem to be surrounded by young people in similar circumstances. It just doesn't seem right that these beautiful youngsters haven't had the chance to enjoy the gifts that life has to offer. Their strength and determination should be an inspiration to all of us in life's everyday challenges. Perhaps that is why they lived amongst us even for such a short time, to teach us a lesson in courage in the face of adversity and to help us to appreciate what we actually have, for however long it lasts. Despite his strength, pain and suffering, Andrew will now enjoy eternal life, with God as well as in our hearts and memories. God Bless and Keep You Andrew. The Kuts Family. Australia.

You had such an amazing impact on so many peoples lives and you will live on within them. You will never be forgotten. You were so real, and that is something to be admired. May you rest in peace. Andrew, you were one of the kindest and sweetest people I have ever met. Your energy and personality lit up the room, wherever you were, and you always had a smile on your face.

You were such an inspiration to me, and I will forever cherish the sixteen years that we have known each other. From our adventures together when we were children to our troublesome pranks together as teenagers, a day will not go by where i won't think of you. The memories I have with you will forever be cherished.

I love you so much Andrew, and I want to thank you for being the best friend that I could ever have. I am so proud to call you my friend, and am so lucky to have met you and had you in my life. Right now, I know that you are looking down on us from heaven, smiling your brilliant smile.

Your Friend Forever,

I'll always remember Andrew as the nicest, strongest person I've ever met. He was a good friend and fellow bass during grade 10. I remember helping him with some of the notes at times and all the smiles we shared. I really hope that he is at piece now and that even though he is not with us physically, he will remain in our hearts always. And to the family I'd like to give my condolences and thanks for having such a powerful and brave child.
R.I.P Andrew you were a awesome bass and a cherished friend and I will never forget you

Andrew was one of the most kind and happy people I have met. He allowed his positive energy to reflect on the lives of other people and taught us all to love not only others, but ourselves as well.

I thank you Andrew for being a great friend and helping to make me a better person.

The courage, strength, love, and perseverance demonstrated by Andriyko and his family is a model for us all. Now that Andriyko has "fallen asleep in the Lord" and is in another world where there is no pain and no suffering, we may rejoice that he has left this earthly world a better place for having been a part of it. Rest easy, Andriyko. Peace to you, Daria, Mark, and Stefan. Vichnaya Pamyat.

Andrew, not a day will go by that I won't be thinking of you. You are forever a part of my life, and you have taught be so much. I can't believe how brave you were, when you faced so much pain. You were always so positive, and made friends with everyone. I'll always remember our CCOC Europe Tour- we had so much fun, and I wish I could go back in time and relive that week.

Andrew, you have taught me to take the time to get to know people. I learned from you that if you do not try to befriend people, you might miss out on some great friendships.
I am so proud to call you my friend.

I know you will be looking down on us, smiling and laughing. Because some of the best memories I have are of us laughing and talking about our lives and our friends.

You have been so strong and brave- I wish I had one tenth of the strength you had.

Andrew,

Every time I think of how your gone it brings me to tears. How is it fair that someone like you must be cheated of experiencing life and have it cut short? All I know is that the time you spent with me, whether it was a quick hello in the halls at school or talking about each others lives in length, your positivity and ability to make one feel loved always made my day brighten. Although you are gone I will never forget you and will try to live my life as you seemed to, one day at a time and living in the moment. You were a beautiful and pure person inside and out which is rare and I feel blessed that I was able to meet you. My heart goes out to your family and I hope they know they could not have raised a brighter, happier, more loving, or more unique son.

Love,

I will forever fondly remember that smile. That beautiful smile with those big pearly whites shining right at you. And the fact that as soon as he flashed you that contagious smile he had to come over and give you a warm and comforting hug, just to make you feel that much better about your day. His happiness and positive attitude was dispersed around us whenever he was near. He literally brightened up a room. I know that Andrew won't soon be forgotten by any of us. We truly loved him and all that he taught us about how to be better people.
With all my heart.

You are beautiful, and I did not have to meet you to know this. No words will ever do justice to the life of a child. My brother was on 8A in Sick Kids when he was younger, for leukemia. Knowing that you saw those same halls and those same walls makes the hole in my soul grow wider. It does not take meeting a child to feel their life and grieve for the loss, I certainly am grieving for you.
