AUSTIN KILPATRICK Obituary

AUSTIN JAMES "JIM" KILPATRICK Jim died peacefully with family by his side on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Toronto General Hospital. Beloved husband of Linda and loving father of Conaire, much loved son of Maureen and predeceased father Joseph and dear brother of Sean, Barry and Nora. Jim will also be fondly remembered by his niece Honor. Jim was a Typographer by trade and was passionate about the printing trade. Early in his career, he volunteered and worked for the International Typographical Union of which the Toronto Typographical Union was an active and key chapter. Jim was elected President of the ITU Local 91 in 1994 and continued in that role when it merged with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada as Local 91-0 in 2005. Subsequently, Jim was Vice President of CEP Local 500-G when Local 91-0 merged with Local 500-G to become 591-G and remained in this role until his unexpected death. Jim was an avid cyclist and is remembered by many in his early career for riding 60 kilometers or more to work every day. In July 1987 Jim received a life-saving liver transplant at Toronto General Hospital after becoming gravely ill at the age of 33. His recovery was very strong and he returned home in September of that same year and went on to live a healthy, productive and happy life as a successful transplant recipient for the past 28 years thanks chiefly to the success of TGH's transplant surgery and after-care program. His family will always be grateful and beholden to all those who helped Jim live a life that encompassed a happy marriage, fatherhood and a successful career. Family, friends and colleagues, including the many union members on whose behalf Jim worked tirelessly for, may call at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane subway station, on Saturday, July 19, 2014 from 2 - 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider signing your organ donor card and/or make a donation on behalf of Jim to the University Health Network Multi-Organ Transplant Program. Jim and Linda were great friends(Linda still is). The world is a lessor place without Jim's smile and his quirky sense of humor. I will miss him but will cherish the memories of my dinners and talks with Jim and Linda and the visits with both of them, their son and their dogs.

My condolences to Linda and Jim's families...I had only known Jim for a short while but he was such a gentleman and listened to all our "dog talk" with no complaint.

I knew Jim best many years ago (when he looked like the picture here) and throughout his life he was the real deal -- a true trade unionist, who made sure his members got the 'work' when some folks strayed to get printing/mailing done by non-union companies. Such a loss. Pat Van Horne, United Steeworkers

I have had the privilege to have known and loved Jim and his family for many, many years. Jim was always a caring, giving and devoted man who gave his all for his family and loved ones and the fairness he so believed in. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. My sincere condolences to Jim's family.

My sincere condolences to Jim's family. I was honoured to work with Jim and was always impressed how he was so welcoming and gave you his undivided attention when talking to you. I fondly remember him reenacting the labour history that he lived as a Printer. We have lost a fine trade unionist and he will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure of working with Jim when I was a CEP National Representative. He was a thoughtful, dedicated, proud trade unionist that worked tirelessly on behalf of the union membership and social allies; thank-you Jim!
