BARBARA GATES Obituary

BARBARA JOANNE GATES (nee REILLY) July 30, 1944 - September 11, 2013 Survived by her loving husband John (Jack), her daughter Andrea and her husband Mark Heazle, son Michael and his wife Anna Patterson, and four wonderful grandchildren on whom she doted, Gregory, Jonathan, Laura and Cameron. She will be missed by her "seesstor" Sue Keenan and her husband Gord, sisters-in-law Nancy Reilly and Kathy Hardy, along with cousins, nieces and nephews. Barbara grew up in Leaside, graduated from Northern Secondary School and attended York University where she and John met. She worked for Metro Toronto Social Services for many years and then enjoyed her retirement traveling, curling, reading and golfing, and spending time with the family at the summer cottage. She will be missed by her many friends. She loved music and theatre, she loved to swim, and enjoyed long walks with her Sheltie, Whinnie. Barbara had a calm demeanor, a positive attitude and a remarkable enthusiasm for life. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Brenda Reilly and her brother John B. Reilly. She was a very special wife, mother, grandmother and friend and we all miss her so much. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at the THORNHILL GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB on Sunday, October 6 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Children's Wish Foundation would be appreciated. I was shocked and very sad to hear of the passing of Barb. She was my supervisor at TSS at the Dovercourt office or “F” as we called it then. She later became my supervisor at the Family Support Program. There are only a few supervisors (which I can count on one hand) while working for TSS that could be called special but she was one. I lost a parent during my time at Family Support and Barb could not have been more supportive, understanding and very kind. Her picture is just as I remember her
My prayers go out to all her family

I am so sorry to hear of Barbara's death. We were great friends all through high school, but lost touch in later years. I will always have beautiful memories of her. My thoughts are with her family at this sad time.

I knew Barb for many, many years at TSS. She was at times my supervisor and always my mentor. She actually changed the course of my life when she assigned me to a position where I dealt with community legal clinics. Within 6 months I was married to a wonderful and compassionate lawyer.
Barb was lovely woman, positive, encouraging, caring and capable.
To her family, I am so very sorry.

I had the pleasure of working with Barb many moons ago for the City of Toronto. Our kids were about the same age and we often shared stories of each other's everyday parent delights. Years later, as fate would have it, I had the pleasure of working with her son. It is with great sadness that I read the news today of Barb's passing. My deepest sympathies go to the entire family. She will be forever remembered.
