HAMILL, BRIAN JOSEPH March 7, 1942 - December 1, 2021 Brian passed away peacefully on December 1st after 79 memorable years and a long and valiant battle with illness, with his beloved wife and best friend Frances by his side. Brian was an incredible father to Mark (Angela), Ciara and Andrew (Melanie) and proud grandfather to Owen, Emmett, Aya and Phoenix. He is survived by his sister, Patricia, who still lives in his childhood home in Belfast, his brothers-in-law, John, Mick and Mark Doherty and John Kennedy, as well as many friends whom he loved dearly. Born in Dublin, Brian moved to Canada in 1968 after completing his teaching degree and marrying the love of his life, to raise a family far from the Troubles in Northern Ireland. He continued his teaching vocation in Toronto, where he enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with the Metro Separate School Board (now TCDSB). Brian derived immeasurable pleasure from teaching, but was also lucky enough to be able to retire early. He generously volunteered his newfound free time with a number of organizations focused on helping people less fortunate than himself, including Furniture Bank, Meals on Wheels and Good Shepherd Centre. The positive impact he had on generations of youth across the GTA continues to warm the hearts of his family every time they hear from one of his former students. While Brian was blessed with many talents, a musical ear was not among them. Yet he will be fondly remembered for merrily whistling his way through life and keeping his great sense of humour and keen wit until the end. Brian's family is grateful for the compassionate support he received from the many caregivers, including at Bridgepoint Health Centre, who made his last years as comfortable as possible. A mass will be celebrated for Brian at Corpus Christi Church on Friday, December 10th, at 11 a.m.

Dear Frances and Family. Brian's passing is such a great loss to anyone who was lucky enough to meet him. The joy he radiated filled so many, including us , with memories that last lifetimes. As teachers, he encouraged us to love what we do, ensure that every child felt their importance, and guide each to success. As a friend, he filled every occasion with laughter, and yes....music...though there can never be enough occasions. The moments we shared will never be forgotten. We are sure that he is looking down on each of us smiling knowing that he left his legacy for everyone. Love what you do, and make every second count. You will always remain a GREAT principal, teacher, and friend. You made each day complete with fun filled memories at St Martin de Porres and beyond. Thank you Brian, rest in peace, and let your light always shine! Frances and Family...we hope you can find comfort and courage as you are reminded every day of Brian's life of joy. God Bless you Frances and Family. with love Rocco and Cathy Nunno

Wishing the family my deepest condolences. I remember Mr. Hamill when he came to St. Lucy's school in Toronto as a new teacher along with Mt Kyne, and Mr Moran from Ireland dropped into a sea of fellow immigrant pupils in Little Italy. His voice resounded from his classroom as he recited passages from stories with passion. Something I never will forget. He brought such live to his work. I later met him many years later when he was a principal at my nephews' school at Precious Blood in Scarborough. His voice and twinkle in his eye were still evident. May God bless you and keep you close. Andrew Kokelj

Brian was a wonderful educator. He was a strong mentor to my children while they attended St Victor. He was very supportive to parents, going so far as to visit my daughter when she was at Sick Kids. I still tell some of the funny anecdotes he shared with me regarding my children´s antics.

I am so sorry to hear of Brian´s passing, though to me he was and will always be "Mr. Hamill", beloved principal. He´s one of the teachers who left a mark on me, we always got along so well, and I have never forgotten him all these years. He sure did like to whistle! I have no doubt he is looking down on us, having been welcomed to his eternal home. My condolences to his family and friends. How blessed we all were to have known such a wonderful man.
