Bridget Harrison Obituary

BRIDGET HARRISON Bridget Harrison, nee Belinda Bridget Blackwell, passed suddenly at age 63 on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at her home in Mississauga. Bridget is the beloved mother of Caleb Aaron Harrison and 'Nanna' to Mason and Mecaela Harrison. Bill Harrison, the enduring love of her life with whom she travelled widely, shared numerous adventures and brought light to the world, predeceased her by one year. Born on November 11, 1946, in London, Ontario to Grace and Doug Blackwell, Bridget was an accomplished actress, singer, and performer by the time she was a young woman. Her appearances were extensive and included the Stratford Festival and the CFPL show 'Act Fast'. A worldly and politically active young adult, she travelled to Liberia with Crossroads International in the 1960s. Bridget graduated from Brescia College at Western University and began teaching, which she loved passionately and which led to her far-reaching educational career. Mainly dedicated to the Peel County School Board, her work also included the Toronto District School Board, the Ontario Ministry of Education and OISE. As a lifelong learner and inspiring leader, Bridget touched countless educators in Canada and abroad. She was a remarkable role model for all young women and a true champion for teen mothers. Bridget will be profoundly missed by family, friends and colleagues around the world, especially her brother Doug and sisters-in-law Jane, Sharon and Liz; her nieces Kate, Anna, Stefani, Samantha, Nina, Jennifer, Jamie, Karina, Sonja, Jesse, Corinda and Niki; and her nephews Marc, Tobi, Andre, Bobby, Ivan, Tony, Greg, Aaron and Steven. She was also 'Nanna' to Lillie, Elia, Lauren, Jackson, Jordan, Jayden I, Declan, Gabriel, Jayden M. and several other adoring children. Love you ... all the world. Visitation will be held at the Glen Oaks Memorial Chapel and Reception Centre, 3164 Ninth Line, Oakville (at Dundas St.) on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Glen Oaks Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bridget Harrison Memorial Scholarship for the Teen Education and Motherhood Program at the Peel District School Board (905-890-1010, ext. 2671) or to Sketch: Working Arts for Street Involved and Homeless Youth (www.canadahelps.org). Mrs Harrison was my grade 12 English teacher at JA Turner High School in 1982. She was a wonderful female role model for me. Best teacher i ever had. Very vibrant and dynamic. She knew her stuff and she loved it. She commanded respect and fully got it. Mrs Harrison was a highly intelligent woman. She was strong and strong-willed, and she was an absolute free-spirit. I watched the Dateline NBC show last night about her passing. I loved when her brother at the end said something like her being well-loved and remembered. She truly was and is. I have talked about her often through the years, and the wonderfully positive effect she had on me.

Bridget was a close friend all the way through high school. We started in the same class in grade 9 (an all girl class for girls who had 'skipped' a grade and were younger than most by at least a year). The last picture I have of us together was taken at grade 13 graduation. Bridget was full of fun, questing for adventure, and the person I most wanted to be like. We lost touch as adults. I am so glad her life was honourable and fine. It seems she was surrounded by love. Who could ask for more than that?

We are deeply saddened at the news of your loss of your very talented and delightful and caring Mother. Mrs Harrison was a wonderful teacher and friend to many many students at Port Credit Secondary School Mississauga. In the past few years, Mrs Harrison has become a friend and neighbor in Erin Mills and I enjoyed seeing her in the grocery store and having conversations with her. Wendy and Bob Hart.

To the Harrison and Blackwell Families. We wish you all the best in this trying time. We met Bridget many years ago through Bill. She was a very kind person, with much passion. We were shocked when we heard the news of Bridget's passing. It must have been a very hard year after the passing of Bill. We shared some good times but not enough. She will be missed, but she can now be by Bill's side as she was always meant to be. We will miss you as we miss Bill.
Hi Caleb. Our thoughts are with you, and the kids. Be strong and make your Mom and Dad proud.

Simply put: she was the best teacher I ever had. Hard to believe that it is almost 30 years, but I remember when she brought a colourful gentleman's magazine into class to read a Truman Capote interview. I remember her as being fully alive, and an example to all of her students. May the happy memory of times together help assuage the grief her loved ones must now feel. It was a life well lived. Blessings.

I had the pleasure of working with Bridget at the Ministry of Education and she was consistently bright, creative, warm and inspiring. Her enthusiasm for life, and her genuine caring for young people, was infectious. Bridget made a huge difference to the people she worked with and worked for. We are going to miss her.

"I went to high school with Bridget. She was a special person back then and lived up to that promise of who she was. I am thrilled to have had such a special role in her life in that I drove her back and forward between London and Stratford for trysts with her dear departed husband. They were each so special it was a marriage made in heaven. They are now rejoined." Marilyn Macmillan, London, On.
