C. Gorman Obituary

DR. C. Kenneth GORMAN

MD PhD FRCP(C)

February 25, 1933 – May 10, 2017

Passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the age of 84. Husband of the late Margaret. Father of Andrew and his wife Lovenia and of Rachel and her husband Gavin Harvey. Grandad of Alexandra, Matthew and Sawyer. Ken dedicated his life to the study and treatment of diabetes; he was invited by Charles Best (co-discoverer of insulin) to the University of Toronto to perform research which led to his PhD and The Starr Medal for his thesis. Following that, Ken was accepted to the Joslin Clinic in Boston as a Trainee Fellow in Diabetes. Upon his return to Toronto Ken earned his fellowship in the Royal College of Physicians: Endocrinology and Internal Medicine. Beginning in 1977 he was a part of the planning and subsequent construction of the Scarborough Grace Hospital (currently Scarborough Hospital Birchmount Division) where he remained as Chief of Staff and Medicine for many years. A past President of the Canadian Diabetes Association, Ken's interest in diabetes was also personal. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 and lived unencumbered by the disease for 82 years. The family will be receiving guests on Saturday, May 27th from 10:30 a.m. until the memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Trull Funeral Home & Cremation Centre Chapel (2704 Yonge Street, 5 streets south of Lawrence Avenue, 416-488-1101). In memoriam donations to Diabetes Canada would be appreciated. Online condolences may be made at

So very sorry to hear of this beloved doctor's passing! He was my diabetic specialist for many years (just decided to look him up and found this).

What made him even more special for his many diabetic patients was the fact he obviously REALLY understood what we live with. I believe he was diagnosed at something like 2 years old?! A good life well-lived. May he rest in peace and enjoy Life eternal. Sincere condolences to the family.

Dear Andrew and Rachel,

I am very sorry to learn of the death of your Dad, Dr. Gorman. He was a fine gentleman and superb doctor. My Mum and I, both diabetics, were his patients. I will never forget him.

May the love of God give you peace. May the love and care of family and friends give you comfort. May fond memories of your dear Dad overtake the grief that your and your families are feeling at this sad time and give you strength through the difficult days ahead. Your memories of him will grow richer as time passes and he will be in your hearts forever.

To you and to all your family I offer my sincere and heartfelt sympathy in your sad loss.

Sincerely,

Eucline C. Alleyne

Dear Rachel and Andrew . . . You have lost a truly fine father, a role model in every sense. I loved working with him on the CCOC board and remember him with deep respect and affection. My most sincere condolences to you and your families.
