Calvin Himel Obituary

DR. CALVIN HIMEL, MD., FRCS(C) On Monday, July 19, 2010 at Bridgepoint Health. Calvin Himel was the beloved husband of the late Christa Himel. He was the loving son of the late Leo and late Bessie Himel. Loving father and father-in-law of Jeffrey and Danay, Susan, David Himel and Nancy Mudrinic, Leigh Himel and Peter Munck. Dear brother of Dr. Bernard and Pat Himel and the late Dr. Maxwell Himel. He will especially be missed by his five wonderful grandchildren: Dionysos, Anastasia, Jazmyn, Elijah and Samuel. He will be missed by Ann Wilson, Merike Kalm, Jaan Roos and his many friends, family and colleagues. It was an amazing gift having all of them in the same city, able to spend time with him these last months. Calvin was a dedicated physician and spent much of his life bringing new lives into this world. He graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School Class of 1958 and received his fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1972. He taught at the Toronto Grace and Wellesley Hospitals. He ended his surgical career at Scarborough General Hospital and was still treating patients and making a difference up until his recent illness. Alongside his passion for medicine, he was an athlete, a pilot, had a love of carpentry, oil painting, completed an unpublished autobiography and was an avid golfer. He was a real renaissance man who will be missed. There will be a graveside service this Thursday at the York Cemetery and Visitation Centre, 160 Beecroft Road, North York M2N 5Z5 followed by a reception at his home. We will be gathering at the front office at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bridgepoint Health Foundation, 416-461-8252 ext. 2967.

Cheryl Ayres: condolences to Dr Himels' family and friends. Dr H delivered my three children. He was kind and had a great sense of humour. I particularly loved his reponse to my mother (retired OB nurse) who asked what type of stitches he used on my incision. He told her he just used spit.
