CEDAR CHRISTIE Obituary

CHRISTIE, CEDAR TOWNSEND "I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart." Vincent Van Gogh Cedar Townsend Christie's life was committed to pursuing her artistic passion, from which she never faltered. Born on August 11, 1946, she lived to create, led a creative life and proceeded along her journey imbuing a joyful and unique aesthetic in everything she touched. To everyone that knew her, Cedar was the living embodiment of her own inner-goddess muse. With profound sadness we announce her last canvas is completed, brushes still, and her studio silent. Cedar passed from the physical world on Saturday, April 3, 2021 in Sidney, BC. She was 74. Born in Toronto, Ontario, Cedar studied art at OCADU and the Vancouver School of Art, earning an Honours Graduate in Sculpture and Painting, and later studied bronze sculpture casting in Italy. Her professional career spanned over 5 decades and included numerous corporate and private commissioned pieces and many notable art exhibitions. Cedar's enormous talents as a professional sculptor, painter and illustrator are widely recognized and deeply respected by the Canadian art community. A small portion of her incredible portfolio is available at www. flickr.com/photos/cedarchristie/. She lived the last 20 years in the close community on Mayne Island, BC, which she often referred to as her creative spiritual centre. Predeceased by her mother Margot (Syme) and father Robert Christie, Cedar leaves behind her sisters Dinah and Fiona and brothers David and Matthew, close cousins Lindy Ratcliife and Ginny Immerglück, and many special friends across Canada. A celebration of her life is planned for later this year. We are grateful Cedar's body of work lives on with us.

I will miss you. Thank you for being a good neighbor and inspiring my son and I to visit Edinburgh. Your story of acquiring your Sgian-dubh was magic. I only wish I had spent more time with you. Ruth

I am now posting the photo of Cedar giving us the giggles with her fake green lips! Taken in the late 90's .

My husband Alec and I befriended Cedar when she was living in the upper beaches. We recently came across a photo taken of her in our back yard with green fake lips on just to give us the giggles! We missed her so much when she moved to Mayne Island and thank you for giving us a forum to say how incredibly she blessed our lives with her artistry for living and making art. She gifted us with one of her pieces (as we were struggling art types as well!) and we will always remember her when we see it ..her generosity and love for life was always a ray of sunshine...I can hear her lyrical voice in my mind. Condolences to friends and family. from Colleen and Alec and James Newell

It was an absolute pleasure to meet and work with Cedar in 1968 in Toronto. She was the stage manager and I was head of wardrobe (but didn't know how to use a Singer!) for Your Own Thing! starring Sandy Duncan (before she became Peter Pan). Our sincerest condolences to Dinah and the rest of Cedar's family.

Cedar was the wonderful and quiet little sister of Dinah and that is how we were able to meet Cedar ... such a perfect, quiet little sister in the midst of a group of teenagers gathered in the Christie household in East York. Definitely a time from the past and we are so sorry to hear of Cedar's passing and her brushes now still. But Cedar has left a wonderful capture of life in all her amazing art which will be here forever.

I "met" Cedar when she was a baby. So was I. She was born in August 1946 and I in September, a month later.
My mother was Eleanor Hunt (nee Wright), and a first cousin of Cedar's father Bob Christie.
My parents paid a visit to Bob and his wife Margot, Cedar's mother not long after my birth and were impressed with Cedar's reported sleep patterns i.e. go to sleep quickly and stay asleep, particularly as I was wearing them out with quite the opposite behaviour. My parents left Bob and Margot's determined that my behaviour was going to change, a story that eventually became part of our family lore.
I think I only met Cedar on one further occasion but given the comments below I would say that her quiet and contented nature was evident from the cradle.
I have occasionally viewed Cedar's art online and I am sad to learn of her death. I send my condolences particularly to Dinah; my mother Eleanor treasured their connection and was delighted each time she saw her.

Cedar was one of the first friends I made on Mayne Island. She was always there to encourage and inspire me to continue my own creative journey. I will always remember her.
