My uncle Bill was an exceptional man of good character, possessing an unusually pleasant manner. He was, in the Bryer family, one whom we would look up to - easy going, kind, gently inclined to appreciating the good in people, and, of course - always offering good conversation - particularly if you were to discuss his hobbies of amateur ham radio and his ability to pound out a bouncy, rag-time number on the piano.
I remember a gift from uncle Bill, presented to me by my father nearly twenty nine years ago, when I began work with the TTC.
That gift was uncle Bill's TTC punch.
I remember the telephone calls I made to uncle Bill's Station Road home in Mimico, years ago, to inquire on his health. While he always downplayed his health he pointed out to me one of my best attributes - my penmanship in letter writing to the Toronto Star.
Little did I know he was one of my biggest fans - since I had a number of editorial commentary published - the vast majority being suggestions to improve the efficiency of the TTC.
He would always compliment me on my letter writing and look forward to my next commentary.
During his last few years I was able to visit uncle Bill at the nursing home in Etobicoke.
Even as his health was in question - in my mind - uncle Bill will always remain the same - no matter what time capsule is remembered - a picture of a gentle and humble man lighting his soothing pipe to engage yet another rousing rag-time melody from the piano keys.
May Gregory, Lloyd, and Allan take heart in knowing their father will be remembered in love and with deep respect.
And, although my words cannot adequately comfort the Bryer family - in their time of grief - true comfort rests in the words of Our Saviour.
From the book of John, chapter 11, verses 25 and 26, The Lord declares: "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die."
Thank you, uncle Bill, for the wonderful memories.
God bless you.

Dear family...
I will always remember all the good times we had together when visiting in Mimico and at the cottage in Orillia. I am very sorry to hear of uncle Bill's death, and wish you all the best during this distressing part of life. God bless you all.
