CLAYTON RUBY Obituary

RUBY, C.M., CLAYTON CHARLES B.A., LL.B., LL.M., LL.D. (honoris causa) It is with great sadness that his family announces the death of their treasure, Clay, on August 2, 2022, at the age of 80, due to complications after heart surgery - a great, tragic irony since Clay was a heart on two legs. Beloved spouse of Harriet Sachs, adored father of Emma (Jane) and Kate (Andrew), cherished grandfather of Esmé and Caleb, and dear brother of Brenda (Bobby). Clay practiced criminal and constitutional law for fifty years and was committed to using his legal skills to make the world a better place. He succeeded. From the start of his career, Clay was a staunch fighter for justice, a brave defender of the unpopular and disregarded, and a calm presence in any crisis. He was wholly himself -- principled, warm, without fear and unparalleled in any debate -- for the entirety of his life. He died happy and without regrets. In lieu of donations, go out and change the world. "Ring the bells that still can ring." A Celebration of Clay's Life will be held at 2 p.m., August 9th, at Mt. Pleasant Funeral Centre, 375 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Toronto. Please wear masks and bright colors.

Fond memories came to us when we heard about Mr Ruby's passing. His wife Harriet and Clayton were regular customers at our Movenpick York Street location. Our hearts go out to you, Harriet and your daughters, and our thoughts are with you.

Please accept my deepest sympathies respecting your terrible loss. I did not know Mr. Ruby but I very much fall into the category of the type of client he championed. I live in a remote part of the country and have little knowledge of the legal community. Accordingly, when faced with the need of a champion of Mr. Ruby's experience and stature, I did not know of his existence. Accordingly, I have been searching without success for exactly such an advocate for more than twenty years and only wish I had known of Mr. Ruby at the outset of my difficulties. In reading his biography and obituary it appears that Mr. Ruby had all of the qualities and sympathies I so desperately need. I cannot imagine how deeply you must feel his loss and all I can do under the circumstances is wish you peace and comfort contemplating the life you shared together.

Respectfully,

Vaughn del Valle

A warm and affectionate friend who assisted me often. His reasoned suggestions, good humour and innate brilliance has always been admired. It has been a privilege to have known him. Although profound condolences are extended to Harriet and his girls and grand children yet his living is the celebration, nazneen

Dear Harriet and family,

My deepest condolences on Clay´s loss. Clay was the person most responsible for my decision to become a bencher, persuading me to run despite my inclination not to do so and supporting my candidacy. For almost 12 years, we worked together. It was a delight. He was a superb bencher, always advocating for greater fairness, equity and diversity in and outside the profession. I was also privileged to serve as counsel with him on several cases. He was generous and gracious. And most importantly, effective in bringing about needed change. He will be missed. Mark

Dear Harriet and family
I am so saddened to hear of your loss. I have such fond memories of Clayton from my very early adult life. Clayton and David Newman were young criminal lawyers. Clayton had to bail us out of several situations which I look back on with a smile. Who could not love Clayton? His warm smile always made me feel welcome. He will be missed by so many. My condolences to the family.
