Clyde KING Obituary

KING, Clyde It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Clyde, peacefully after a short illness, at the Greenview Senior Care Residence in Toronto on Friday, November 19, 2021, at the age of 90 years. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Shirley, and survived by his only son, John. The ninth of ten siblings, Clyde was born on May 20, 1931 in Fortune, Newfoundland. He married Shirley, also from Fortune, in 1955, and John was born in 1959. They settled in Don Mills, where Clyde retired after 35 years working for Revenue Canada. A proud Newfoundlander from a close-knit family, he was a devoted husband and caring father, with many longtime friends. Clyde will be best remembered by many for his tireless contributions to developing minor baseball in Toronto, most notably his more than 45 years as a dedicated volunteer, administrator, and innovator with the North York Baseball Association (NYBA). Highlights of a very successful coaching career include winning the Ontario Baseball Association Coach of the Year award (1994), and managing both the gold medal-winning Toronto team at the Ontario Summer Games (2000), as well as the Ontario Girls team that won the Baseball Canada National Championship (2004). A loyal Blue Jays fan, Clyde received the Province of Ontario Volunteer Service Award (2004), and his team also won the Toronto Regional Secondary School baseball championship (2009). None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of Shirley, herself an NYBA volunteer for almost 40 years. John will be forever grateful to the entire team at Greenview for the kind and compassionate care provided to Dad in such comfortable surroundings. Visitation at the MOUNT PLEASANT FUNERAL CENTRE - 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, on Sunday, November 28th from 3 to 5 p.m. and on Monday, November 29th at 10 a.m. followed by a Service in our Chapel at 11 a.m. These are FULLY VACCINATED EVENTS. Masks, proof of full vaccination status, along with government issued ID are required for those 12 years of age and older in order to attend the indoor funeral services. Please leave time prior to the service to check-in. If desired, as an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Clyde's name to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, or the UHN / Toronto Rehab Foundation.

Hi John.
I'd like to offer you my condolences. I read about Clyde King's death in Lives Lived in the Globe and Mail this morning. I think he was the coach of my brother, Jimmy Evans, in the late 1960's. He had a significant positive influence on Jimmy and I remember both of my parents both speaking very highly of Mr. King as a baseball coach and a good person.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Evans

I recently found out about the passing of this wonderful man. From the time my sons were little to when they left for university, they dedicated their summers to playing with the North York Baseball League where Clyde was a coach. To say he was dedicated and loved baseball was an understatement. I can't remember a day where he wasn't at the diamonds where he loved to be, even if no one else was there. He was sweet, gentle and always willing to make any improvement to players' ability either with his coaching style 'squish the bug' or inventing equipment that improved their swing, pitching or catching. His loss is not only his family's but all those who spent time at the NYB fields. I'm so sorry to his family for this enormous loss. Thank you for being so nice to my sons, Josh and Adam Bell. Rest peacefully Clyde. Nicky Hindmarsh

I knew Clyde through North York Baseball and his coaching at York Mills Collegiate. I'll always remember him teaching us hitting and repeating phrases such as "Like a wet noodle and WHACK!" as he swung his sawn off bat he customized for his own drills. He'll be missed!

Clyde had that rare ability to combine joy and humor with his sense of purpose, ingenuity and accomplishment. And it was this joy and love of life that makes us all smile at the mention of his name. We all will miss him.

Our deepest sympathies to Clyde's family and close friends. We had the pleasure of knowing Clyde through the NYBA. Clyde was a fixture at Bond Park and his passion for baseball and especially NYBA was always evident. He always had a smile on his face and always working on a project. We will miss Clyde; Bond park will not be the same without him.

Clyde contributed faithfully and diligently to the senior management team of the Toronto District Office at Revenue Canada for many years. I keep great memories of his considerate and positive contributions often in demanding situations. It was a pleasure working with Clyde while benefiting from his tempered judgement and experience.

John, Fran and I are sorry for your loss. It was our honour to have shared a few years with your Mom & Dad. If the wealth of a man's life is measured by the number of people he touched, Clyde was a billionaire many times over. Who else could save a tournament with bags of kitty litter?

John: All of us in baseball in Toronto are saddened to learn of your loss. Your dad was one the brightest, friendliest and most innovative persons that I have met in my life. Visiting Clyde at Bond Park was always a joy, looking at his newest coaching aids. He always had that twinkle in his eye and a wry smile. He and your Mom gave so much of themselves to kids over decades. We are richer for having know them.
