CRAIG CARTER Obituary

CARTER, CRAIG RICHARD Craig Richard Carter died at home peacefully April 4, 2021, cared for by his wife Anne and beloved children David, George, James and Katie and their partners Laura (and dear grandson Madden), Sydney, Samantha and Sean. Craig was a respected lawyer at Fasken, an expert who wrote two textbooks on real estate agreements and easements. Also a cinephile he wrote pun-filled exam questions using the setting from classic movies (Dorothy's house lands in Oz and kills witch) for his real estate law students at Osgoode, University of Toronto and Queens. He will be remembered for his wit and ability to make everyone laugh. He received the Law Society Medal for lifelong contributions to his profession and helped found the Six-Minute Real Estate Lawyer conference. His door was always open and he was never too busy to give advice, help or mentorship. He will be greatly missed.

Craig was a greatly respected member of the Ontario Real Estate Bar. He was a prolific writer and speaker at innumerable continuing education courses. His Law Society Medal was richly deserved for his many years of selfless and valuable service to our profession. My sincerest condolences to Anne, David and all the Carter family. Max Maréchaux.

As A partner and Chair of litigation and the Firm, Craig was the lawyer that I went to with complex intellectual real estate issues. He was the person I went to for a chat and a laugh. He was an friend with an easy wit and charm. With pleasure and commitment in the Justice of the cause, I supported his much deserved Law Society Medal - the highest award for a lawyer. He adored his family and was very proud of his wife.

I knew Craig both as a classmate and as counsel for me from time to time on real estate litigation matters. He was indeed my "go to" person: an authority in real estate law but humble, patient and personable. He will be missed.

What a loss. I remember his patience and humour, but most of all I remember his insight and love of the law. He will truly be missed.

I was so sorry to hear the news of Craig's death. My condolences to Anne and family. It was my privilege, shared with many others, to work with Craig on various committees, programs and initiatives of importance to the real estate bar. It was always a pleasure to be with him, and his thoughtfulness and wisdom will not be forgotten.

I know Craig through our sons playing baseball together and through mutual friends. While I didn't know Craig well, whenever we were at our sons' games or at our mutual friends' party, Craig always came over to say hello. He had a fantastic memory; could talk on most any topic I brought up; and was a great listener. Such a warm and gentle man. I'm certain his family and close friends will miss him dearly. My sincere condolences.

Anne and Family please accept my condolences.
Craig and I spent many long and rewarding working hours together and a few great lunches at his favorite spot being BARDIS Steakhouse.
We played tag team on ever so many files with David Salomon, Craig's Corporate Law Partner and good friend.
The stories Craig would relate relative to his sons and their love of baseball always fascinated me.
Craig was a great guy and a respected Lawyer.
May God be with him and have him rest in peace.

I have known Craig for nearly fifty years. It wasn't enough time. Reid and I will treasure the friendship we shared with him on the front porch in Riverport and around the dining room table. Our love to Anne, David, Geordie, Jamie and Katie and all who loved Craig as we did.

If the measure of a man is character, Craig was never wanting. His intellectual gifts were his birthright but his character, integrity and humility were honed over a lifetime. Hw could walk with crowds and keep his virtue or walk with kings nor lose the common touch.
Three years ago we went for a three day golf trip together. We laughed. We talked. We mocked. We played. He was my trusted friend and an inspiration. The flame of his presence is out. The inspiration endures.

I never got the opportunity to meet Craig however I know he was of the highest character because that is what I think of his beautiful daughter Katie. She is a dear friend and better yet, part of my chosen family, providing so much support and humour whilst I was so far from my own. May you Rest In Peace, Craig and shine your light brighter than ever. All my love, Claire Nazzari

Dear Anne, David, George, James, Katie and families,

We remember Craig as a lovely, outgoing family man and he cherished each one of you. Craig loved being a husband and a dad, supporting all of you in your many endeavours, and also finding the time outside of family to coach children's baseball. Kent remembers Craig as an enthusiastic baseball coach and really enjoyed his time playing on the team. The loss of Craig has created a big hole in your lives, but know you're surrounded by many family and friends who deeply care for you.

Love,
Nancy, Matthew, Scott, and Kent Foster and families

I worked at Faskens for about 10 years but not in the real estate department. Whenever he saw me or anyone else he always said how are you doing. Very pleasant person. A true gentleman.

Anne, Peter and I were saddened to hear of Craig's passing. I remember well the day I walked into his office in the early 90s and saw the picture of you and the kids on his desk and then realized the kids I saw at the playgroup were his and you were his wife. Such a small world. He was a great guy with a great sense of humor and a kind and loving father. May he rest in peace and may you hold all your memories of him close. Alice and Peter

I did not meet Craig many times but when I did I was impressed with his grace and good humor. His intelligence also radiated from him. As a friend of Anne's, I send my deepest sympathy to her and her lovely children.

We are very sorry to hear the sad news about Craig. He taught the Real Estate Transactions course at Osgoode Hall Law School for a number of years and we came to know him in our capacity as staff members of the Law School. Craig loved teaching and he was always kind and very fair with the students. He was quite brilliant but very humble and low key. He will be sadly missed by the law students. Our sincere condolences, Mark Hamilton and Gayle Dyke
