Cyrus Jackson Obituary

CYRUS ALLEN JACKSON It is with great sorrow that the family announces the passing of Cyrus Allen Jackson on the morning of October 9, 2011 with his daughter Shelley by his side. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Esther Umpherson (2009) and his sisters Helen, Loretta and Lorena. He is survived by his daughters Pam Mather (Alex), Shelley and Heather Jackson (Doug Getgood) and his grandchildren Alison, Erin and Alexander Mather and Andrew and Kimberly Hart. Born May 24, 1917 in Unadilla, Nebraska to Cyrus Allen Jackson and Harriet Eberle, he came to Canada in 1919 and grew up in Toronto always within easy reach of his Eberle relatives on Eastwood Ave. He attended Bowmore Road Public School and Danforth Technical School where he learned the "Architecture and Building Construction" trade qualifying as an architectural draftsman. He joined the U.S. Army in May 1943, serving with the 35th Signal Construction Battalion in the Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe campaigns. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to Toronto, met and married his wife Esther in 1948 and raised his family. He was the Chief draftsman and silent partner with C.B. Dolphin, Architect. He was appointed as an associate in the firm Mathers and Haldenby - Architects. He was a supervisor of drawing production and field operations of major institutional and commercial projects. Among other projects, he was associated with the alteration to the West Block of the Parliament Buildings, Ottawa; Project Director for the Library at Queen's University; and Project Director for the Robarts Library at the University of Toronto. Dad dedicated his life to both family and career. He often came home from work to tuck his young children into bed only to make a late return trip downtown to finish work. Dad enjoyed sitting in his garden with his trademark gin and tonic, soaking up the sunlight, listening to the exploits of his children and grandchildren. He always made everyone who came into contact with him feel as if they had his undivided attention and interest. He was a great story teller and we are fortunate that Mum wrote many of them down. Cyrus Allen Jackson was laid to rest beside his wife Esther at Whites Cemetery, Poland, Ontario on October 12, 2011.We miss you, Dad.
