D. McNabb Obituary

D. IAN McNABB With profound sadness we announce the passing of a proud Canadian, Colonel (Retired) Ian McNabb who died peacefully on Saturday, January 21, 2012 in Collingwood, Ontario. Ian is survived by his adoring wife Barbara McKenzie, mother Madeline Backius (nee Tier), sons Chris (Rochelle), Sean (Pet) of Kitchener, granddaughters Meghan and Lauren, step-sons Andrew and Kyle Wright of Vancouver and Hong Kong, sisters Peg (Don), Bepi (Dick), Barbara (Garth) and many devoted nieces and nephews. Ian was born in St. Thomas, Ontario and graduated from the University of Western Ontario. Colonel McNabb retired in 1995 from the Canadian Army after 35 years of distinguished service, much of it overseas with NATO and on UN missions. Colonel Ian felt privileged to command his beloved Armoured Regiment, the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadian). He also served as a member of Directing Staff (British Army Command and Staff College, Camberley) and as Canadian Military Attaché in Central America and Mexico. On retirement Colonel Ian worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross in South America teaching the Geneva Conventions. In 2003, Ian followed Barbara to Hong Kong, where he directed the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and then to Abu Dhabi where he worked for AECOM. Ian was known as "Mr. Canada" for his exemplary efforts to unite Canadians in expat communities wherever he lived. Ian and Barb enjoyed travelling the world and he loved to share tales of his amazing life. Ian was a true officer and a gentleman who was loved by all who were privileged to know him. He lived and loved every day to the fullest. Lucky were we to have this exceptional man in our lives! Dear Barb,

When I think of Ian, words like honour, dignity, sincerity and integrity come to mind. Ian embodied the term "gentleman" and I can only imagine what a source of inspiration he must have been to his regiment. An afternoon in his fascinating company left one feeling there were so many aspects of this life to explore and appreciate.

We will fondly remember our wonderful visits with you both.

Sending our love,
Dianne, Mario, Dominic, Érik & Noah

Dear Barb, Andrew and Kyle
I am so sad for you all as the entry of Ian into your lives brought so much richness, variety and opportunities for knowing more love and learning. Thank you for the continued connection between our families, as it was through this that I had the wonderful good fortune to spend such great times with you, Barb, and Ian in Collingwood for Elvis festivals and, of course, in Abu Dhabi, for one of the great vacations of my life. Mr. Canada certainly made an impression in the UAE as it seems he did throughout his life wherever he was and with whoever he touched. In my short times with him I learned more than the fact that beer tastes different in different glasses, as he was so very intelligent, learned and experienced in topics from international politics to rebel life in South America. I am so happy for your time together and so sorry for your loss. Love Lyz
