DAN BEAGAN Obituary

DAN (D.J.) BEAGAN Dan (D.J.) Beagan of Etobicoke, passed away on April 11, 2013, the eve of his 93rd birthday, doing what he loved, being out and about. We thank the person who comforted him when he collapsed and Dr. Puri and staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, Etobicoke, for their kindness. At a young age Dan was a go-getter. He was 4 when he first took the reins for the team of horses owned by his dad. His first job at age 6 was at the family sawmill. His dad was scaling lumber coming off the saw, putting it in piles, calling out the numbers for Dan to copy and calculate the totals per wagon. The Great Depression hit hard and in 1936 Dan left school to help support the family. Dan met the love of his life Audrey, a Toronto girl, in 1938, although he didn't realize that until the summer of 1939! On September 9, 1939, war was declared and he hitchhiked to Toronto to enlist. Dan joined the Ontario Regiment (Tanks), then the Victoria Rifles and was sent overseas to Newfoundland. On leave from Newfoundland, Dan eloped with Audrey on April 15, 1941. In May 1943 he was in Aldershot, England, when he was "reclaimed" by the Ontarios. Dan contended that the Ontarios baseball team needed a good third base man! With the Ontarios Dan saw significant action in Italy, France, Germany and Holland. Dan returned home on July 2, 1944. He was hired by Etobicoke police, meeting the 5'10' height requirement by wearing 2 pairs of heavy woolen socks! Dan built the family home in 1947 in Etobicoke where he continued to live. In 1955, Dan surprised Audrey with the purchase of a piece of "swamp" near Bobcaygeon where Dan built the family cottage. Eventually, Dan found his niche in sales ending his career with Pure Metal Galvanizing in 1979. Dan and Audrey enjoyed decades of summers at the cottage with family and friends and where Dan spent many happy hours in his vegetable garden. Dan was an extremely active man to the end who acted and looked younger than his years. He was a member of Islington United Church, Mimico Masonic Lodge, Etobicoke Senior Centre, the Ontario Regiment and an avid contract bridge player. A deeply caring man, Dan readily helped others, driving for appointments, visiting. He treasured his neighbours who made him part of their lives. A storyteller extraordinaire with an incredible memory for details of people and places, Dan entertained with a rich history of his times. Sundays were spent comparing crossword answers with Lorrie and Steve. Weekdays started with a call to Lorrie and a coffee with his friend Ralph Kearney. Most importantly to Dan, he was a devoted husband to Audrey, who passed away on August 18, 2011, loved his children Cheryl, Janice (predeceased 1991) and Lorrie. Dan was very proud of his son-in-law Steve; grandchildren, Claire, Amy, Adam, Kristopher, Jeffrey; great- grandchildren, Elise, Kathryn and his "daughter" Rosanne Wild. Born April 12, 1920 at Parry Sound, the third child of twelve to Florence and George Beagan, Dan is survived by sister Marion Dunk, brothers Cliff (Barb) and Bill (Barb) and predeceased by infant brothers, Robert and Doug and brothers Jack (Bunny), Ted (Martha), Ross (survived by Iona) and sisters Hilda Cox (survived by Frank), Connie Patterson (survived by Jack), Judy Gibson (Tim). Dan is survived by sisters-in-law Irene Craig (Carl deceased), Marilyn Noble (Doug), brother-in-law Ern Miles (Ann), cousin-in-law Pat Archer (Fred deceased). Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Islington United Church, 25 Burnhamthorpe Road, at 1:30 p.m., April 17, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ontario Regiment Foundation.

When i was 17 yo and living in my home town of Crieff in Scotland with my mum and dad there was a knock on the door one evening so i answered it and standing there was a man and a woman whom i had never seen before. The man asked me in a strong Canadian accent if Bill Brough lived here. I called to my dad " dad there is someone to see you" and he came to the door. It was a wonderful moment - my dad recognized the stranger straight away and was obviously blown away by the encounter.
Anyway, my dad ( Bill (william) Brough ) and Dan had served together during the Italian campaign with the Ontario Regiment and were real good buddies. OMG what a thing to happen. Dan had managed to track down his old pal and took a gamble to come all the way to Scotland.
United once again their friendship grew and grew. Dan and Audrey took my parents over to Canada on several occasions and enhanced their lives greatly. They even went up to the CABIN a couple of times lol.
I never really got to know Dan and Audrey but, in my heart, i will be eternally grateful for what they did for my parents.
So, with that, i will say RIP Mr Beagan. God love you. From Bo ( William ) Brough. Thank you.

My sincerest condolences go out to Lorraine and his grandchildren. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Beagan when he came to our clinic to get himself a new pair of hearing aids. He was charming, funny, so kind and full of interesting stories from his time in Italy when he served for the country he loved. He always put a big smile on all of our faces and never failed to look at the bright side of everything! It was an absolute honor to have worked with him for over 5 years and I am so blessed to have met such a loving, kind, happy and energetic man. Rest in peace Mr. Beagan..you will be sorely missed!

Lorrie, it was a joy to know your Father and I was honoured to be given the opportunity to record the story of his early days. The words for the story came from me listening and digitally recording Dan's voice. When you are ready I would be happy to download those stories and send them along to you in his memory. My Thursdays volunteering at the Islington Seniors Centre will never be the same without Dan 'phoning to tell me my weekly joke.

Dan and Audrey are profoundly missed on Avonhurst Road; they were both active, engaged, caring members of our community. The street will never be the same.

Ken and I valued their friendship and good humour; our children -- Bennett and Olive -- viewed 'Uncle Dan' and 'Aunt Audrey' as a bonus set of grandparents. We feel blessed to have known them.

It has been an honour to have Uncle Dan in my life. His wisdom, kindness to our family, a memory that Kreskin would envy, penmanship; I treasure all the notes from Dan, then witnessed and authenticated by Aunt Aud!
So many fond memories and such an inspiration. I will miss him dearly and I will take the best of his character to build upon.

Our brother Dan was a Canadian Soldier. Dan was my inspiration to become a soldier as well, at age sixteen. Dan went-off to war when I was a one-year old. It wasn't until I was six, in 1944, that I recall ever seeing Brother Dan. Several of my first-grade schoolmates were playing on the gravel road in front of our house in Parry Sound, Ontario in the summer of 1944, when a soldier suddenly appeared at the top of our street, hurriedly striding towards us. My mother was hanging clothes to dry on our veranda when Dan reached the staircase leading to our home. I vividly recall my mother dropping her clothes basket and shouting, “Billy, it's your brother Dan, he's come home from the war.” Dan's nine siblings were proud of him. We told him these things and there is comfort now in knowing this! Our brother Dan was always a striver, never working an angle, just working. Danny was a believer in the saying that in life, you make your own luck. He was also famous for saying, no matter what the problem, “everything is copasetic.” That's how our brother Dan the baseball player, high school track star, respected policeman and decorated WW 11 Canadian Serviceman approached life. Many times in Dan's company we paid our tributes, extended our gratitude and expressed our thanks to this devoted friend and brother. Dan wasn't a hard man to read and nothing was more obvious than the source of his happiness which was his much-loved wife Audrey, his children Cheryl, Janice and Lorrie, and his grandchildren.
Regrettably, much was left unspoken but at the end of his days, “Danny” knew how much he meant to his family, friends, and his beloved Ontario Regiment. Still, it is an ending and what is left now, is to say goodbye. And so for now Danny farewell. We will always be grateful for your good life. Happy to Meet; Sorry to Part; Happy to Meet Again. Brother Bill.

Dan will be fondly remembered by everyone here at the Islington Seniors' Centre. The Centre was about half way between the post office and his home and we quite often got a visit as he passed by to share a joke or a story that was always followed by his hearty laugh.
God bless you Dan.
Audrey has been waiting for you.
