DAN NICHOLSON Obituary

NICHOLSON, DAN March 3, 1949-April 28, 2020 It is with profound sadness that Len, with his mother Connie Nicholson, announce the sudden passing of a beloved twin brother and devoted son. Our hearts and those of our entire family are broken over his loss. Dan was a dedicated teacher, starting his career in education in 1971 at Our Lady of the Assumption School. In 1988, he moved to St. Michael's College School, where he taught English for the next 14 years. Dan loved being in the classroom and was always focused on his students' learning and success. In addition, Dan loved anything to do with sports and coached hockey, football and volleyball. He also developed an interest in photography. He not only took pictures of school events, but evolved into professional photography when he retired. For almost 20 years he provided quality photos through his business "Dan Nicholson Photography." Dan also loved buying and selling sports memorabilia and travelled to shows throughout Ontario making many new friends along the way. In his teaching career as well as in his sports interests, he developed a reputation for being honest, reliable and a man of integrity. It is a tribute to Dan, that since his passing, we have heard from many of his friends and relatives whose recollections and impressions of him have been a consolation to his 91 year old mother, myself and his children, who lovingly held their father's hands and were there with him at the end of his life. A family graveside service will be held as a result of the current situation. If desired, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Condolences to [email protected]

I am truly shocked and saddenned after learning of Dan's passing only this weekend. The weekend of the Toronto Sport Card and Memorabilia Show. For almost 30 years I worked this show and came to know Dan as a truly kind gentleman who always had a smile and kind word to say.
An easy memory to hold - sorry for your loss

I just have to add to my previous post: I graduated in 1983 as Student Of The Year along with my classmate Natalie. I have a stutter and Mr. Nicholson (Sir) was able to give me the confidence to go in front of people and speak. It wasn't easy, but he made it easier to get my confidence and to be a success in life. I was the captain of the volleyball team, and I was also was in the badminton tournament; with him as the referee. We had a great time on the winter overnight class trip at the conservation park; great memories that I still recall to this day. He taught us everything, but especially grammar, he would say that we are ahead of high school and university. I have helped my children with reviewing their school essays and speeches, with him in mind. Mr. Nicholson has made his mark in our lives and he will be dearly missed. Dan, rest in peace. God bless.

My favourite teacher by far. He was my gr. 7 and gr. 8 teacher at OLA in 1983/84 and 1984/85. So many lessons learned from him...starting with the value of exercising first thing in the morning and not ending a sentence with a preposition. RIP Sir.

My sincere and deepest condolences to the Nicholson Family. I am saddened to hear of his passing. Dan was and will always be in my thoughts as he was instramental in shaping me into the person I am today, as my teacher, coach and often as a confidant. Dan will be missed but will be in my thoughts and the memories will last until the day we meet again. To a fantastic person and friend may you rest on peace.

My sincerest condolences to all of the Nicholson family. I had the pleasure of getting know Dan when I taught his twins, Andy and Stevie, at St. Edwards and when picking up my eldest son from playing with their children. Our paths would cross again when he took hockey team photographs of my youngest son. Dan was a kind, patient, and caring man who will missed by so many. May he Rest In Peace.

Mr. Nicholson, or better known as Sir, was not only a Special Teacher but was a Special Person as well. He Truly Cared about his Students, I know this because I had the Extreme Pleasure of not only having Sir as my Grade 7 and 8 Teacher, but he became a Good Friend and Confidant, after I left Our Lady of the Assumption as well. I also agree that Sir was the Best Teacher I ever had. Sir not only did I Respect You as my Teacher but you were a Very Good Role Model as well. Sir was the kind of Person that Gave so much to his Teaching and seeing his Students Suceed was his only Reward. I owe so Much to you, Mr. Nicholson ( Sir ), and I am Deeply Sadened by your Passing. I met Both Lenny, your Twin Brother and your Mother Connie, and my Heart goes out to the Both of them as well and Sir's Family and Many Friends. Thank you Sir for making my Life Better because I had you in it. Rest in Peace Sir, I Will Truly Miss You! Jim Bradley ( Anderson )

Dan was a special person. To have spotted him was to engage him be it in the halls, an alumni event, or at the rink he was good for a gab. As a teacher, he knew his stuff and more, he was well-equipped to find ways to cascade important and meaningful things to both enthused and un-enthused young minds - this was the teacher I knew at St. Michael's. Dan was his own man, to be sure. Not one to suffer fools, but more often than the rest of us, managed it with civility, grace, and humour. Dan taught grammar, but outside the class, he never corrected it that wasnt his style. Above all, Dan managed to hold, in that ever so delicate balance, his own identity while honouring the customs, traditions, and values of all things good. On a personal level, he inspired me to lay some foundational bricks as I fumbled my forward. I am grateful - he will be dearly missed.

I met Dan at a recent Sports Card Show in Thornhill. after talking with him for a while I realized I knew his Brother from Regina Mundi. He was very kind and generous to me. He even sold me a couple items at a very fair price, and even suggested I call him in the near future for to view his extended sports collection. Really nice guy.

Dan was my grade 9 english teacher and simultaneously my hockey referee partner. This unique dynamic made it super weird when he asked my mother to come after school one day to talk about my grades! As we went through my notebook (good grief!), my mother explained to him that our goal was to get a 70% average in his class. He said, You dont shoot for 70, you shoot for 100. Dont cap you potential, always try to be the best you can. This memory will stick with me forever. He taught me to speak with confidence in school, and we got to practice it together on the ice. Mr. Nicholson, youwill be deeply missed.

Dan, even though I didnt know longer than a few years now always made me feel very special and made me feel very welcomed at the NHL Alumni Lunches... introducing me to everyone and enjoying poking the odd joke at everyone.... he was always looking to help me out and even came by my office a couple times with some neat items for my collection.... I had been talking to him on the Friday and then... I didnt hear back from him.... the world lost a great genuine guy and I feel horrible for the family and close friends... I have a couple of great pieces that I will carry on in memory of him... Ill miss him....

We are a part of all whom we have met. Younger days, spring or summer, sitting on the veranda steps of my parents home on Marquette, looking up, there is Danny's passing hello, left me wondering, where's he off to on this sunny day. My deepest sympathies to the family, may you all find peace knowing your love for Danny lives on.

Everyone he touched in the collectibles industry had a smile on their face when Dan came by. His stories, his humour was infectious. Travelling with Dan to the different shows over many years was a delight, I looked forward to his snoring and sports and political banter, all ending with 3 pensions! He will be missed by so many! He was a kind, funny, smart and fun man. Most of all he was a great human being and my friend.
