DANIEL SCANLAN Obituary

DANIEL JAMES SCANLAN It is with great sadness and a profound sense of loss that our family announces the passing of Daniel J. Scanlan on Saturday, April 26, 2014 in his 95th year, surrounded by his family in the comfort of his home. Daniel is reunited with his beloved and most cherished wife of 66 years, Shirley Ann. Loving father of Danny and his wife Lisa, Carole Ann, Joseph and his wife Bonny, Paul and his wife Tracy, Michael and his wife Allison and David and his wife Marsha. Caring grandfather of Brandon and his wife Erika, Jordan and his wife Ellen, Paul Jr. and his fiancée Susan, Ashley and her husband Ryan, Julie, Andrew, Matthew, Danielle, Stephen, Samara, David Jr., and Skylar. Proud great-grandfather of Xavier, Sheppard and Cooper. Special friend to Ida and Jerry. Beyond devoting his life to his family, Daniel was the founder and longtime Chairman of Arbor Memorial Services. A company that has grown from its modest beginnings in 1947 into a national leader providing cemetery and funeral rights to countless families across Canada. Outside of his professional life, Daniel and his family enjoyed many summers at their cottage in Selkirk, Ontario. During the winter months he would travel to the Ft. Lauderdale area to enjoy time with his beloved wife and their many friends. Aside from tennis, skiing and the annual fishing trip, Daniel was an avid golfer who was a member at St. George's Golf and Country Club in Toronto for over 40 years. Always grateful for what he had, Daniel was a devout Roman Catholic who rarely missed a Sunday morning Mass. Typically the sharpest at the table; he always carried himself with a sincerity and humbleness that endeared him to all he knew. He believed in giving everybody an opportunity to succeed and never limiting their success. Daniel was immensely proud of his family, many friends and all those who helped build Arbor into what it is today. He will be fondly remembered as a devoted family man, respected businessman and first class friend. A very special thank you to Maureen, Karen, Allison, Joycielyn, Blondel, Joyce, Nenita and the entire homecare team from SRT Medstaff and Dr. Barbara Pilarski. The family has chosen to honour Daniel's life with visitation at the Glen Oaks Memorial Chapel and Reception Centre, 3164 Ninth Line (at Dundas), Oakville (905-257-8822) on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 10 a.m. from Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, 3055 Bloor St. W., Etobicoke. Entombment at Glen Oaks Memorial Gardens. A reception to continue the celebration of Daniel's life will follow at the Glen Oaks Reception Centre in Oakville. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Daniel Scanlan Arbor Memorial Foundation, 2 Jane St., Toronto, Ontario M6S 4W8 would be greatly appreciated. I had the pleasure of meeting 'Dan' (Mr. Scanlan) on a number of occasions during the last year.
I found him to be quick witted and genteel.
My sympathies to Mike and Allison through whom I was introduced to Mike's father.

I am greatful to Mr. Scanlan, as kids thats what we called him. He introduced me and Paul to Golf at the Coral Creek Golf Course in Fisherville. Thanks Dan.

I wish I knew him as a contemporary. I'm sure when he gave us advice, which was often, I would have actually listened to him and who knows.
